“I’m very smart and wise. You’re very lucky to be married to me.”

“Luck had nothing to do with it. I kidnapped you, remember?”

Her mouth twitches. “Don’t ruin this.”

“I’m not ruining anything.”

She runs a wet finger along my lips, and I see the affection in her eyes. We don’t need words. We know how we feel.

I pull her down, and she comes easily, settling her cheek over my heart.

For a long time neither of us moves because the moment we do, the world will come back in, but in here it’s just the two of us.

She screams in her sleep, and I'm awake before my brain even knows why.

Having enemies has trained my nervous system to go from unconscious to alert in under a second, and I'm sitting up, my hand reaching for the gun on my nightstand before I realize what is going on.

I look at Sunny. She’s twisted in the sheets beside me.

"No…” Her voice is shredded. "Please … you don’t have to do this … please…”

I reach for her shoulder. "Sunny."

Her hand flies up in a desperate swing at something that isn’t here.

"Sunny. Wake up."

Her legs kick at the sheets, the sounds coming out of her are guttural and tortured, and my insides are shredding at the fear I hear in them.

I've heard fear before. But this … this is something else.

"Jeremy—"

The name rips from her throat in a sob.

"Jeremy, stop—"

My blood goes cold.

Who the fuck is Jeremy?

"Sunny. You're dreaming. Wake up. Wake up, baby."

Her eyes fly open.

She’s disoriented and stares through me at something that isn't here. She’s panting, and her skin is drenched in sweat.

"You're okay," I say. "You're with me. You're safe. It was a dream."

She blinks with confusion.

"I'm here," I reassure her.

Her breathing is ragged, and she looks dazed.
