“Of course not.” My hands moved up and down her back. “Why would you think that?”

She pulled back to look at me, and I brought my hands to her cheeks to wipe her tears. “Because I know something happened between us, but I can’t remember it and you can.”

“I could never hate you, Kenzi.” I wanted to say more, but Kenzi’s mouth slanted over mine before I could. Her movement was hesitant at first, and I was so starved for her that I was leaning into her kiss. My hands trailed down until I gripped her hips, intent on pushing her away. Instead, I brought her closer, and she started rocking on my lap. Our mouths fused together, wet and warm and familiar. God I’d missed this. The feel of her in my arms, the feel of her body pressed up against mine, the sounds she made when we kiss, when we have sex. This girl was made for me, no doubt at all, and that only made it harder for me to pull away. I got lost in her a little while longer, until we were both panting, and breathing each other in deeply. It didn’t matter that a few minutes ago she was almost incoherent - even though that’s what I had to keep in mind. All I cared about was that my girl was with me right now, in this moment.

We broke apart, working hard to catch our breath. Her eyes were bright with lust, her body humming with the same desire I felt wrapping itself around every fiber of my body.

“Was it always that good?”

Her question was innocent, and unsure, but for me it was the equivalent of a cold bucket of water being thrown over my head in the middle of winter. She was just as into it as I was, the way her nipples hardened into peaks was proof of that, but the feeling that I was taking advantage of her remained unchanged. It would be easy to strip her bare, and bury myself between her thighs until the last three weeks were history.

But I wasn’t made that way.

I won’t have sex with Kenzi while she’s like this.

A sickening thought occurred to me then. What if she never gets her memory back? Would I just have to move on and forget we happened?

God, I was so tired.

“Vaughan?”

“I can’t do this.” My voice was gruff. “I thought I could, but…” I shook my head. I told Aiden I knew what I wanted, and at that point I was ready to fight for Kenzi, for what we had. I saw then that it wasn’t up to me to fight. It was up to her.

“I have to go.”

Kenzi extricated herself from me, and slumped on the edge of her bed. “You don’t want me anymore.”

That was not true. Not even fucking close.

“Is it because of the blonde I saw you with at Stella’s?”

I glowered, and shook my head. “That’s Staci, my roommate, which you…” I wanted to tell her she knew that, but that would only add to her inner turmoil and confusion over our situation.

“You need time, Kenzi,” I added quietly, frustrated. “And so do I.”

Time for what, I wasn’t sure. The thought of giving her time to move on terrified the shit out of me, but I just knew she needed to make sense of things as they are now. And I needed time to…accept that she may never remember?

Fuck.

I leaned down, and left her with a parting kiss on the crown of her head. Once I’d shut her door, I found Aiden, Liam and Maddy still in the living room, their expressions grim and concerned.

“I’m heading out,” I told them without stopping. My feet carried me to my car, and the moment I was alone inside I broke. My fists pounded the steering wheel until the pain shot up my forearms, and I screamed until my throat burned. The one and only time I cried was the night Kenzi was taken to the hospital, but the pent up emotion I’d been carrying around since then came bubbling out and I stopped trying to contain it. It felt like I’d lost Kenzi all over again, and this time, as much as I hated it, I knew I had to be the one to walk away.
