The change in his voice told me immediately that some bullshit was coming.

“What?” I asked, already heading toward the door.

“You taking Jru to Miami?”

I kept walking. “For work.”

“Mhm.” He let that little sound sit there like he had something else to say.

“Malachi.” I said his name slowly, warning him not to start.

“I'm just asking. Four days is a long time for a nigga who didn't even want her working at the club.”

“Worry about finding our money,” I told him, reaching for the door.

His laugh came through the phone. “I'm handling mine. You handle yours.”

I hung up on his ass.

Asshole.

But as I locked the door behind me, his last words followed me to the truck.

You handle yours.

That was exactly what I intended to do.

I just didn't know what the fuck handling Jru looked like yet.

At 6:58, I pulled in front of the building Malachi had put Ashlynn in.

I'd originally planned to send a driver for Jru, but somewhere between last night and this morning, I'd changed my mind.

At seven-oh-two, she stepped outside pulling a black suitcase behind her. The second she spotted my truck, she slowed, surprise crossing her face. I got out and walked around to meet her.

“You came yourself?” she asked, looking from me to the truck.

“Good morning to you too,” I replied, reaching for her luggage.

She smiled a little. “Good morning. I thought you were sending a driver.”

“I was.”

“And then?” she asked, watching me like she expected some kind of explanation.

I took the suitcase from her. “I changed my mind.”

“Oh.” She studied me for another second before letting go of the handle. “Okay.”

That was it. No questions about why I'd changed my mind, which was good because I didn't have an answer I wanted to give her.

I loaded her suitcase, and we got in. The second I shut my door, her perfume hit me.

There it was again.

Jru caught me looking at her while she fastened her seat belt. “What?”

I started the truck. “You ever gonna tell me what perfume you wear?”
