“What if your fantasy could be real? Don’t you want to take that risk? Solan could be everything you want and more.”
“Or he could turn into an enormous alien pain in the butt,” Vegas said. “What if he doesn’t live up to my fantasies?”
“What if he does? What if he exceeds them?”
Vegas swallowed. “I do... like him.”
“You’re head over heels in lust with the alien.” Heather grabbed Vegas’s arm and they ran along the corridor together. “Now it’s time to fall in love with him properly.”
“What about My Single Alien? What about everything I’ve built here? If I let it all go and Solan lets me down, I’ll have nothing.”
“Or you could have everything.” Heather checked around the corner and then pulled back. “Diadora has done you wrong. She needs to pay for that. Maybe you can come to a compromise. You could keep your job and get to know Solan. That way, you have a backup plan if he does turn out to be more trouble than he’s worth.” She squeezed Vegas’s arm as they continued along the corridor.
“Like she’d ever agree to that. She’s going to delight in firing me and ejecting me from the nearest escape hatch without a space suit.”
“Nobody said love is easy. Quick, the guards are changing shift. We can get out of here without anyone noticing.”
“You’re a good one to talk about love. When was the last time you went on a date?”
“Six months ago.” Heather grimaced. “I’m keeping count. This isn’t about my love life. You’ve found your alien mate. Stop fighting the fact you’ve found someone who can match you. He’s as stubborn and as pig-headed as you. And he’s hot.”
“I’m not sure any of those are compliments for me,” Vegas grumbled as they left the holding cells and entered the main station.
Heather grinned at her. “You have to stay and fight for your alien.”
Vegas leaned her forehead against the wall. Heather was right. She wanted everything. She wanted to keep her job, she wanted to stay on the station, and she wanted her stubborn alien by her side. Taking a deep breath, she looked at Heather. “Let’s go start a fight.”
Chapter 16
The scene in front of Solan was one of disorder as he reached the holding cells with Padam. Guards hurried backwards and forwards looking busy but not seeming to be doing much.
“What’s going on?”
“We’ve had a cell breach,” a tall, muscular guard said.
“Who escaped?”
The guard glanced at him. “Why do you want to know?”
“To ensure I know the level of threat while on board the station.” Solan took a menacing step toward the guard and watched him shrink away. Human males were pathetic. No wonder their women had chosen aliens to mate with. He forced himself to remain calm, despite his battle fury still simmering in his veins.
“You don’t need to worry about this escaped prisoner,” the guard said. “She’s human. We’ve already put out an alert. She’ll be back in her cell within the hour.”
“What is the name of this human?” Solan’s heart beat unnaturally fast. Could Vegas have escaped? Could his mate have been clever enough to sneak past these guards and try to leave the station? He needed to stop her if that was true. She had to know he wanted her and would do anything he could to have her by his side.
The guard looked at the screen in front of him. “Vegas Munro. Do you know her?”
Solan didn’t bother to answer. He turned to Padam. “Perhaps she has been taken. Boros could have got here before us.”
“If he was involved with this, there would be more carnage,” Padam said. “This looks too controlled for one of Boros’s rampages.”
A smile edged Solan’s lips up. “I agree. Vegas has done this, but we need to make sure she is safe.”
“No one took Vegas,” the guard said. “She was broken out. We had a security pass taken.”
Solan nodded. So this was where Heather went. Solan admired her courage. She was a determined little human and served Vegas well.
“You’re going to save your mate?” Padam grinned at him.
