“Aubrey?” I called as I came inside.

She’d left the office early to take the girls to choir rehearsal at their church. Her husband would be the one picking them up.

“Up here!”

“Hey, boo. How’d it go?”

She was in her room, folding and putting clothes away.

“It was a damn setup!”

“What?”

“The interview. It was a setup. I saw Kira’s car sitting in the driveway.”

“Are you fucking serious?” She dropped the T-shirts back in the basket.

“I recognized it before I got out. I can’t believe this bitch tried to trap me.”

“Did she see you?”

“I don’t know. I drove off as soon as I realized.”

“Oh my God. Melody, I’m so sorry.”

“I know you didn’t know.”

“No, I didn’t. I would’ve never sent you there. The name she gave was Kimberly Johnson.”

“I know, boo.”

She hugged me, and I held on to her. I had been so scared in the car. Being back at her house made me realize how badly I needed to be somewhere familiar.

“That bitch is crazy,” I said against her shoulder.

“From now on all potential clients have to send their IDs over before I send a caretaker in for a home interview. Actually, all initial interviews need to take place in my office.”

“I’m just so shaken. I need to speak to Justice but I’m so mad at him. He dismissed me without hearing me out.”

“I’m so sorry about all of this. But we’ll figure something out.”

She was so sweet. In reality, we weren’t figuring shit out. It was all on me.

“I’m done with these jobs, Aubrey. I can’t do this anymore.”

“We’ll figure something out.”

I nodded, though I had no idea what else I could do. She had already gone out of her way to help me. I didn’t want to keep making my problems hers.

“I’m gonna go lie down.”

“Do you want some water first?”

“Please.”

I reached into my purse for my phone as she started toward the door. The pharmacy bag caught on it and came out, too. Before I could grab it, the bag fell and the pregnancy test box slid onto the floor.

Aubrey stopped, her eyes shooting down. I felt the judgment as soon as her eyes landed on the box.
