Prologue

Dear Storie,

Baby girl, I read that letter you sent multiple times before I could figure out how to respond to you. I really do appreciate you for reaching out to me. It’s fuckin’ me up to know that I might have a fifteen-year -old daughter. I get out in six weeks and this is a surprise of a lifetime. It’s a lot to take in, but I’m glad you found me.

I’m sorry about your mother. I won’t talk bad about Monica now that she’s gone, but she should have told me there was a chance you were mine. It really was just one night, like she explained in the letter. We’ve known each other since we were young, but once she got with Justice all bets were off.

If I had known you were mine, I would’ve done my best to be there for you. Being locked up wouldn’t have stopped me from calling, writing, or making sure my people looked out for you. These walls ain’t never kept me from taking care of what’s mine.

But none of this is your fault. You were just a baby when your mother made a decision that affected your whole life. Monica took the choice away from both of us, but we have a chance to get the truth now.

I included the hair you requested for the paternity test. It’s about time we both found out the truth. Until then, keep this between us. We need to know the truth before anybody finds out and tries to interfere.

I understand Justice raised you, and I ain’t tryin’ to take that away from him. But if that test says you’re mine, I’m coming for you. Blood is thicker than water and I ain’t lettin’ no more time get in between us.

I got six more weeks before I’m released. That lil six weeks ain’t shit compared to the fifteen years we already lost. As soon as I walk out of here, I’m coming straight to you. We have a lot of time to make up for, baby girl, and I promise nobody is going to keep us apart again.

Write me as soon as you find out the truth.

Your real pops,

Tavares M.

“Yo, I’m gonna need about another ten showers!” Bryce gagged as he walked into my office after completing one of the worst tasks I had ever dished out.

“With what I paid you, you could afford for a few rose bearers to bathe you,” I chuckled.

“Rose bearers?”

“Yeah, like in Coming to America.” A look of confusion washed over his face that caused me to shake my head in disappointment.

“You ain’t never seen Coming to America?”

He shook his head. “Nigga, I was born in 2004. That shit came out right after TV stopped being in black and white. Right after Jim Crow. Probably right after slavery.”

I let out a laugh. “You callin’ me old?”

“Nah… Coming to America is old.”

“Who raised you? I’m revokin’ ya Black card,” I laughed.

“With how old that movie is, you’re revoking my Colored card.”

“Dawg, get out of my office,” I laughed as I shook my head.

“Yeah, I’m about to. I’mma head down to the strip club and pick up some rose bearers. To exfoliate my skin. That shit is still crawling from that nasty shit. But check out the Washington Post. There’s an article about it,” he said as he headed towards the door.

“Aight. Again, thank you bro. I know that was no easy task.”

“That bitch should’ve never fucked with lil Dream’s horse. Her restaurant deserves all those mice and roaches. Blech!” He cringed as he headed out of my office.

Quickly, I pulled up the Washington Post to find an article written about the infestation at Marceline’s, Kira’s restaurants.

A week ago, when she killed my daughter’s horse, I set out on a mission to destroy her. I hit up everyone I knew in city hall and then I paid Bryce to break in and unleash mice and roaches in her kitchens.
