I smiled and settled back in my seat. I already knew what restaurant I wanted. We used to go places together without him spending half the meal telling Dream to sit down.
Then the screen on the dashboard lit up. Someone was calling him.
Fuckin’ Melody?
Of course that bitch was calling. She had already ruined enough of my life, but apparently she needed to check in and see what else she could fuck up. Was he talking to her again? What the hell were they talking about? Is that why he was acting weird with me?
Justice pressed a button on the steering wheel, dismissing the call.
I kept looking through the windshield.
He didn’t answer her. I noticed that. But he hadn’t blocked her either, and I wanted to know why she felt comfortable calling him in the first place.
What was going on? I thought I had him all to myself!
My fingers tightened around the seat belt. I loosened them before he looked over.
I had been so sure she was gone. He had put her out himself. I hadn’t even needed to convince him that time. She had done the work for me by lying about who she was.
Now she was calling him in the middle of the day.
Maybe he was still ignoring her. Maybe she was one of those desperate bitches who couldn’t accept that nobody wanted her anymore.
I wanted to believe that, but Justice was staring at the road without saying anything. He hadn’t called her annoying or asked why she was bothering him. He just kept driving.
I turned toward the window so he wouldn’t see my face.
We stopped at a 7-Eleven a little while later. Justice parked at a pump and told Dream to stay in her seat while he got gas.
“Can I get a snack?” I asked.
“Yeah. Hold on.”
He got out and took his phone with him.
I watched him through the windshield. He stood beside the truck with it against his ear, looking toward the highway. His mouth barely moved when he spoke.
I couldn’t hear a fucking thing.
After waiting long enough for him to remember I was sitting there, I opened my door.
“Where you going?” he called.
“Inside. You said I could get something.”
“Wait a minute.”
I stood beside the truck while he finished his call. I wanted to ask who he was talking to, but that would’ve given him a reason to tell me to mind my business.
I was already minding it. He was my business.
He came around to the passenger side and handed me some money.
“Get your sister something, too.”
Of course.
Inside, I walked past the refrigerators and stopped in front of the candy. I picked up a dark chocolate bar with coffee beans. I hadn’t tried it before, but I bought it along with Skittles and Doritos for Dream.
