Chapter

Forty-Nine

Salem

Our kisses heat quickly.

Logan’s lips are warm and familiar, but there’s a desperation in the way they move now. It’s like he’s trying to remind me that he’s alive, trying to make me feel it. And God, I do. My fingers fist his shirt, dragging him closer as I exhale a shaky breath through my nose.

I truly believed he was gone forever, and now he's here and he's alive and so fucking beautiful it makes my heart hurt.

His hands slide around my waist, carefully dancing up my spine, but I don’t want to be gentle right now. Not after spending all these weeks in a state of slow decay, only surviving moment to moment out of habit. I plunge my tongue into his mouth and pour every aching, lonely second of the last four months into the kiss.

He gasps, and when he lifts me into his arms before pinning my back to the wall, I let him. I let myself feel again. Feel his hot mouth trailing down my jaw, my throat. Feel the way his fingers curl into the waistband of my shorts, silently asking permission, teeth grazing my collarbone.

“Tell me you want this,” he groans into my skin. “Tell me you missed me as much as I missed you.”

I wrap my legs around him tightly. “I missed you so fucking much it hurts.”

Logan closes his eyes like the confession pains him, and when they open again, there’s something broken behind them, something that matches the way I’ve felt since the day he left me. “I thought I’d never get to touch you again.”

Threading my fingers through his hair, I tug just enough to make him whimper. “You almost didn’t. So let's not waste it.”

Then we’re kissing once more, harder, hungrier. As if we can kiss our way through the wreckage of our lives and come out whole on the other side.

He pulls away for only a moment to yank my shirt off, but the sight of my necklace makes him pause. “You kept it,” he breathes, voice thick with emotion.

My pulse thuds in my ears as I glance down at the wedding ring he slipped onto my finger beneath the blinking neon lights of that cheap Vegas chapel. “I never took it off, even when I hated you. Even when I thought you were gone forever.”

He touches the metal band softly. “Fuck, Salem…”

Holding his gaze, I reach behind my neck and unclasp the chain, letting the ring fall into my palm. “Until I can get back home, none of this matters. In the eyes of the law, we're still husband and wife. I want to treat this moment like our wedding night and show you how empty I've been without you.”

His eyes shudder. For a split second, I catch a glimpse of that boyish awe in his features—the one from prom when he couldn't keep his attention off of me. “You sure? Because if you put that ring back on, I’m not holding back.”

I slide the warm metal all the way down until it rests snug against my knuckle. “Then don’t.”

Just like that, he’s on me, mouth crashing into mine with a fervor that steals every ounce of air from my lungs. Hands are everywhere, Logan’s breath hot against my throat as he presses me into the wall like he’s been dreaming of this moment for months.

The hard ridge of his cock grinds between my legs. Teeth, lips, tongue, all fusing into a tortured rhythm, and I moan when he slips a hand beneath my bra to pinch a nipple.

“You're so beautiful,” he murmurs, pulling my tit free before dipping down for a bite. “Perfect, and soft, and mine.”

With a snort, I unhook my ankles and drop to the floor to remove my shorts. “I think you misconstrue the meaning of ‘just friends.’”

“Doesn't matter.” He picks me up again, lips tracing a path between my tits. “Wherever you go, or whoever you're with, you're still mine because we belong to each other.”

The conviction in his tone has my heart skipping a beat, but I watch him with a raised brow as he rubs my clit through the thin cotton of my underwear. “Jesus, when did you get so strong? How are you holding me up right now?”

“Physical therapy. I've been building muscle.”

Shame twists in my gut for leaving him to deal with that on his own, but there's nothing I can do about it now. I can't change the past. “Does this ‘belonging to each other’ apply to you, too? Are you mine, Logan? No matter what?”

“Always,” he swears, shifting my underwear to the side. His eyes stay on mine when he runs a finger through my slick heat.

A moan tries to leave my throat, but I swallow it down and widen my thighs for him instead. “Yeah? Even when you're with Dev?”

That makes him freeze. A shadow crosses his features before he glances down between us. “Devon is… complicated. He wasn't happy when I told him I was coming after you. That guy's got some serious issues to work out.”
