Chapter Twenty
Davix
I sprinted through the woods, my canines aching for blood. Why was the Crimson Order so close to my property—and rogues too? They knew better than to come so close. They had seen what I had done to the last one who had stepped foot on my property.
Matt and Silas ran behind me, attempting to keep up.
Before I had locked her in my bedroom, Ember had said something about there being multiple wolves surrounding the Crimson Order fiend before they slipped out of there. Hazel had said there was only one rogue.
But I wasn’t taking any chances. Not when Ember was at the center of this.
Whoever the fuck started this is going to pay for it.
About another mile, and I stepped into a sea of blood. I transformed into my human form and stalked through the blood that was inches high.
All this blood for one dead rogue?
This looked like a fucking battlefield.
The stench of rotting flesh drifted through my nose, yet there weren’t any wolves around. No flesh. No fur. Just blood. Tons and tons of blood. I waded through the puddles of it and scanned the surrounding area, spotting scratch marks on the tree bark.
Once I found one single rogue, butchered, I leaned down and grazed my fingers over his fur, examining the wolf and determining that he really was a wolf and not affiliated with any other pack in the area. But … why would a rogue attack? Did he smell Hazel?
No, that can’t be it.
The rogues in the area knew what would happen to them if they touched anyone from my pack. I’d rip them to shreds, worse than what the Crimson Order had done to this guy. So, was it Ember? Was she the reason he had attacked?
I picked one of his legs off the ground and sniffed it to see if I could trace the scent. The Crimson Order had a distinct scent; however, they never left traces of their presence, and today wasn’t different.
I balled my hand and slammed my fist into the nearest tree, the bark crumbling off it and landing at my feet.
What the actual fuck is going on? Why was the Crimson Order here? Red eyes. All this blood. No wolves anywhere?
“Fuck!” I growled.
“Goddess, there’s so much blood,” Matt said. “Why didn’t we hear anything?”
“Because the Crimson Order didn’t want us to hear anything.”
Silas whistled lowly, muttering something about Hazel on her period and all this blood. I snarled at him to keep quiet and tightened my fist so hard around the leg that it crumbled to pieces in my palm.
If they had wanted Ember, they could’ve taken her. Hazel couldn’t stop someone from their organization. Their pack was ranked number one in the entire world, not just this forest, yet they lived several thousands of miles away.
They shouldn’t have been here, and they shouldn’t have been protecting Ember and Hazel.
They always turned a blind eye. They didn’t care who lived and who died. They had come into power by being ruthless pieces of shit. They made pacts with the Moon Goddess to curse packs. My pack.
After I sniffed the air, the faint scent of heat drifted through my nostrils. I hadn’t recognized it when Hazel brought back Ember because I was too pissed off that she’d put her in danger.
Yet there it was.
A faint scent of lust.
One that shouldn’t start until closer to the full moon. One that would only be this strong now if it came from an alpha’s mate. One that … if I wasn’t careful, would expose Ember as my mate to my entire pack.
I had to get her out of my packhouse as soon as possible, but still keep her safe.
Because I didn’t trust my packmates. Nobody should when a female was in heat. But more importantly, I didn’t trust myself to keep her around and not mark her pretty neck. No, no, I wanted to mark her. Badly. And I shouldn’t.
