Christopher steps forwards.
“Alice isn’t capable of making a rational decision in her present state. We’re worried about her!”
I hold my hand to my chin.
“Interesting. She was rational enough when you needed her agreement to marry you. Yet when the pendulum swings the other way, you’re suddenly concerned.”
“She did agree. She was perfectly compliant.”
Compliant.
That piss poor excuse of a word says it all.
I look him dead on.
“Based on your father’s heroic struggle against perfect health, I believe. Such a beautiful relationship you have in the making there, Otley. I’m surprised Alice isn’t here bowing at your feet out of adoration.”
Parker practically growls.
“This is not a fucking joke, Reid!”
“No. It isn’t,” I say. “It’s your daughter’s future and happiness we’re talking about. Which is why I’m curious as to why you’re far more interested in retrieving her than asking what made her run away.”
Bill’s eyes don’t waver from mine.
“She had an emotional outburst. This has nothing to do with you.”
“Strange, since you marched into my casino to discuss it.”
He scoffs at me.
“We all know what’s going on here. This infatuation she has with you.” Parker unfolds his arms, hands on his hips like a prick. “I need to speak to Alice. Talk some sense into her.”
“She’s on her way. Then she can tell you to fuck off for herself.”
We all look towards the door when the handle turns, but it’s Eli, not Alice who appears. He stands there, silent and immaculate, his eyes fixed on Parker.
Jesus Christ, I know that look. He reserves it for assholes who’ve crossed a line.
It’s cold enough to give me shivers.
Eli rarely despises anyone on sight. He considers hatred an inefficient use of attention. Parker, however, appears to have earned an exception.
“Would you like me to have them removed, Jack?” Eli asks me. “Give me the word, and it’s done.”
Parker barely acknowledges him, turning his attention back to me.
“This is a private family discussion we’re having here.”
“You’re inside our casino.”
Parker turns to face Eli full on.
“Mr Carlton, I presume?”
“Indeed.”
“I suggest you allow Mr Reid and me to resolve this without unnecessary interference. This has nothing to do with you.”
