I looked down at the magazine between us.
“I am.”
Ellis’s smile changed.
“Good.”
I looked at him. “What?”
“Nothing.”
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
“I can look at my girlfriend.”
I laughed.
“You stole that from me.”
“Still works.”
I reached across the counter and took the magazine from him.
“Go find your child.”
“She knows where I am.”
“That wasn’t what I said.”
He walked away smiling.
I watched him for a second before putting the magazine beneath the counter where it wouldn’t get bent.
“You do not need two copies.”
Naomi tucked both magazines under her arm. “One is mine.”
“And the other one?”
“Also mine.”
I stared at her.
“Goodnight, Luna.”
“You’re ridiculous.”
“And you’re in a magazine.”
She made it out the door before I could tell her to shut up.
Maya wasn’t much better. She left a few minutes later after making me promise to save another copy because apparently her mother needed one too.
Once they were gone, Chapter & Charm settled into its after-hours quiet.
Ellis and Mila were still here.
