“They’re right there.”
Ellis handed the magazine back, and Mila started from the beginning again.
He reached for another copy.
“You haven’t read it yet?”
“Nope.”
“I thought you knew it came out.”
“Naomi texted me.”
I looked toward the other end of the store. “Of course she did.”
“She sent me a picture of the first page.”
He laughed and opened the magazine.
“I’ll read it now.”
“You don’t have to stand here and read it.”
Ellis looked at me over the top of the page.
“I know.”
The answer made me smile.
I turned back to the computer and let him read.
Mila wandered toward the children’s section after deciding there weren’t enough pictures to keep her interested. Ellis stayed at the counter.
Every now and then, I glanced over. He actually read the whole thing. Not skimmed. Read.
When he got to the end, he closed the magazine.
I waited.
His mouth curved.
“You want to know what I think.”
“Maybe.”
He put the magazine on the counter.
“I think it sounds like you.”
I wasn’t expecting that.
“What does that mean?”
“Exactly what I said.”
“Helpful.”
He smiled.
