“That she was going to pick that picture.”

“The hand-holding one?”

“Yeah.”

“I thought she might.”

“How?”

I glanced at her before turning onto the main road.

“I don’t know. You start noticing things after a while.”

“What things?”

“Which pictures people keep coming back to. Usually it’s not the one they thought they’d like when we started.”

Luna shifted toward me a little. “Why not?”

“Because people worry too much about the camera when they know it’s there. How they’re standing. Whether they’re smiling right. What they’re supposed to do with their hands.”

“So basically me.”

I laughed. “You said it.”

“I hate taking pictures.”

“I know.”

“I never know what I’m supposed to do.”

“That’s because you’re thinking about it too much.”

She looked at me. “That sounds like something you’ve told me before.”

“Probably.”

“You have.”

“Then why’d you ask?”

“I didn’t ask.”

I smiled and kept driving.

For a minute, she didn’t say anything. I figured the conversation was over until she reached for the air vent and turned it away from her.

“So what makes a good picture, then?”

I thought about it for a second. “Depends.”

“On?”

“What I’m shooting. Who I’m shooting. What they want.”

“That’s a terrible answer.”

“It’s the real one.”
