I picked it back up.
“Mrs. Williams.”
“Tell her I said hey.”
“Mama says hey.”
Mrs. Williams smiled. “Tell her I said she still owes me that pound cake recipe.”
“You hear that?”
“I heard her. Tell her she’s not getting it.”
I shook my head.
“She said—”
“I heard her too,” Mrs. Williams said, laughing.
“Good, because I wasn’t about to repeat it.”
I handed over her bag.
“You have a good night.”
“You too, baby.”
She headed toward the door as I picked my phone back up.
“See? This is why I don’t put you on speaker.”
“Didn’t nobody tell you to.”
“You were yelling.”
“I was talking.”
“Same thing.”
Mama ignored that.
“Anyway, I don’t know what else you expect me to cook.”
“Something besides baked chicken.”
“Your daddy likes baked chicken.”
“Daddy likes anything you put on a plate.”
“Exactly. Makes my life easier.”
I smiled and started straightening the bookmarks beside the register.
The bell above the door chimed.
“Have a good night, Mrs. Williams.”
“You too, Luna.”
