“You gave me the whole plot.”

“I did not.”

“You told me enough that I don’t need to read it.”

Renee laughed. “See? Same Luna.”

Luna looked around the table.

“I regret inviting you.”

“Me?”

“Yes, you.”

“Your parents started it.”

“And you joined them.”

“I’m trying to get to know you.”

The words left my mouth without much thought, but the teasing in her expression softened.

For a second, she just looked at me.

Then her knee pressed a little more firmly against mine beneath the table.

“You could’ve picked a less embarrassing way.”

“I like this one.”

A smile pulled at her mouth before she looked down at her plate.

Across the table, Renee suddenly became very interested in cutting another piece of chicken.

Marcus did the same thing he’d been doing all afternoon and minded his business.

Mostly.

Mila, thankfully, was more concerned with whether she could have another roll.

“Can I?”

I looked at her plate. “Finish the one you have.”

Mila stuffed the last piece into her mouth and looked immediately at Renee.

Renee laughed and put another roll on her plate.

I shook my head.

This was how it started.

Dinner stretched longer than I expected, but I didn’t notice until I glanced toward the clock and realized we’d been sitting there for almost two hours.

Mila was slowing down beside Renee, her answers getting shorter as the day caught up with her. She still insisted she wasn’t tired when I asked.

Her yawn said otherwise.
