“So this is Ellis.”
Luna made a sound beside me. “Mama.”
“What?”
“You said it like you’ve been waiting at the window.”
“I wasn’t at the window.”
A man sitting at the kitchen table looked up.
“She was.”
“Marcus.”
“What?” He looked at me. “She was.”
I laughed before I could stop myself.
Luna closed her eyes.
“I’m leaving.”
“No, you’re not,” her mother said.
“I just got here and I’m already tired.”
“You’ll be all right.”
Mama Bennett wiped her hands on a dish towel before coming toward me.
“I’m Renee.”
“Ellis. Nice to meet you.”
“Oh, I know who you are.”
“Mama.”
I looked at Luna.
Her eyes closed again.
This might be fun.
Renee hugged me before I could decide whether we were shaking hands.
“It’s nice to finally meet you.”
“You too.”
She stepped back and looked at the container in my hands.
“And you brought something.”
“Dessert.”
