“Hold this.”

She looked at it. “Why?”

“Because I only have two hands.”

“So do I.”

I stared at her.

She hugged the bottle against her chest.

“Thank you.”

We made it halfway up the walkway before the front door opened.

Luna stepped outside.

Something in me settled at the sight of her.

She was dressed simply, jeans and a soft sweater, her hair falling around her shoulders. Nothing about her said she’d spent the last few days thinking about this dinner nearly as much as I had.

Then I noticed the way she rubbed her palms against the sides of her jeans.

Maybe I wasn’t the only one.

“You made it,” she said.

I stopped in front of her. “You sound surprised.”

“I’m not surprised.”

“You texted me to make sure.”

“I was confirming.”

“Four days later?”

“Plans change.”

“Mine didn’t.”

Her eyes met mine.

For a second, neither of us said anything.

Then Mila stepped between us.

“Miss Luna, Daddy made me carry the grown-up drink.”

Luna looked down.

Then at the bottle in Mila’s arms.

Then at me.

I closed my eyes.

“Why is she carrying wine?”
