I closed it behind her. “Your standards might be a little low.”

“My standards are fine.”

“Apparently not if opening a door got me accused of doing too much.”

She started toward the restaurant. “You want me to get back in so you can do it again?”

I laughed as I caught up to her. “See, now you’re being difficult.”

“I learned from you.”

The restaurant was busy without being crowded, full of the usual Wednesday morning mix of people who apparently had somewhere to be and people who looked like they had no intention of being anywhere else. A waitress led us to a booth near the window and left two menus on the table before promising to come back for our drink orders.

Luna slid into the seat across from me and opened hers.

“You brought me somewhere with a four-page breakfast menu.”

“You say that like it’s a bad thing.”

“It is when I have to be at work.”

“You have plenty of time.”

Her eyes lifted over the top of the menu. “You planning on getting me there by ten?”

“That was the agreement.”

“And if I’m late?”

“You’re the owner.”

“That does not mean I get to show up whenever I want.”

“Pretty sure that’s one of the benefits.”

“It is not.”

“Then you bought yourself a job with no benefits.”

Her menu lowered.

I smiled.

She stared at me for another second before a laugh slipped out of her. “I really don’t like you sometimes.”

“That’s unfortunate.”

“Why?”

“Because you agreed to a date.”

She looked back down at her menu, but not before I caught the smile she was trying to hide.

The waitress came back for our drinks, and Luna ordered orange juice while I asked for coffee. By the time she walked away, Luna had made it to the second page of the menu and somehow looked less certain than when she started.

“What are you getting?”

“Don’t know yet.”
