The building was smaller than I expected, two stories of brick with a row of balconies stretching across the front. A few cars were scattered throughout the lot, and I checked the address Luna sent me against the number on the building one more time before looking toward the second floor.

Apartment 214.

I had no idea which one that was from where I was parked.

At exactly 8:55, I reached for the door handle.

My phone buzzed before I could open it.

You can come up now.

I laughed.

Were you watching the clock?

Mind your business.

Coming from you?

8:56 is also acceptable.

I got out before she could move the goalpost again.

I found 214 near the end of the second-floor walkway and barely made it to the door before it opened.

Whatever I was about to say disappeared.

Luna stood on the other side with one hand wrapped around the doorknob, and for a second, all I did was look at her.

Her curls fell loose around her face and shoulders, fuller than they usually were when she was working and pushing them out of her way every five minutes. She was wearing a fitted brown top with jeans that hugged her in a way I probably shouldn’t spend too much time appreciating if I planned on getting her to breakfast before ten. A pair of gold hoops caught the morning light when she tilted her head at me.

Her lips curved slowly.

“You okay?”

“Yeah.”

“You sure?”

I let my eyes move over her once more before meeting hers. “You look good.”

Something in her expression softened.

“Thank you.”

Her gaze dropped over me then, taking in the dark jeans and button-down I eventually settled on. She lingered just long enough for me to notice.

“What?”

Her eyes returned to mine. “Nothing.”

“That look wasn’t nothing.”

“I was looking at you.”

“I noticed.”

“And?”
