“No.”
“Why?”
“Because we’re eating.”
“We’re finished.”
I looked pointedly at the bite of grits still on her plate, and she followed my gaze before rolling her eyes.
“You’re irritating.”
“So I’ve heard.”
She reached across the table for another potato, and without thinking, I caught her wrist before her fingers made it to my plate.
We both stopped.
It wasn’t dramatic. My hand wasn’t even wrapped tightly around her, just enough to interrupt what she was doing, but the warmth of her skin registered before anything else did. Luna looked down at my fingers around her wrist and then back up at me, one eyebrow lifting.
I let her go.
“You’re serious about these potatoes.”
My voice sounded normal enough.
Her mouth curved. “Apparently, you are too.”
Then she took the potato anyway.
I laughed and reached for my water, but I was still aware of the place where my hand had been a few seconds earlier. It wasn’t a handhold. It wasn’t anything, really.
Still, I noticed.
That was becoming a problem.
The check arrived before I could spend much time deciding what kind.
Luna reached for the check at the same time I did, but I got there first.
“You’re not paying for both of us.”
“I asked you to come.”
“I could’ve paid for myself.”
“I know.”
I handed the server my card before Luna could argue again.
She folded her arms. “You’re very stubborn.”
“I’ve heard that.”
“Fine. But I’m getting the next one.”
I looked at her.
Her lips parted slightly before she recovered.
