“Thirty-four.”

“Exactly.”

I laughed. “We met young.”

“How young?”

“Sixteen.”

“Oh, wow.” She looked ahead again. “So high school?”

“High school.”

She was quiet for a second, not in a way that felt uncomfortable or overly careful. Just thinking.

“That’s a long time to know somebody.”

“It is.”

“How long ago?” she asked.

“Three years.”

She nodded, and this time, when she went quiet, I had a pretty good idea what she was deciding.

“You can say it.”

Her brows pulled together. “Say what?”

“That you’re sorry.”

A small smile touched her mouth. “I am. I just didn’t know if you wanted me to.”

“I’ve survived hearing it before.”

“I figured.” She glanced at me. “Doesn’t mean you always want to.”

I looked at her, but she kept her eyes ahead as we walked.

“I’m sorry, Ellis.”

“Thank you.”

And that was it. No question about how Elena died. No sudden change in the way Luna looked at me now that she knew there had been a wife before this version of my life.

By the time we reached the corner, the light had changed, and Luna stopped beside me.

“Did Mila get her shoe opinions from her?”

I smiled before I could stop myself. “Absolutely.”

“I knew it.”

“You met her once.”

“That was enough.”

“She made sure we didn’t leave the house without her sparkly shoes.”
