I laughed and slid the book back into its place on the shelf.
“What do you read?”
“Why are you assuming I read?”
I stared at him.
Ellis lowered the camera.
“What?”
“You have a six-year-old daughter who walked into my bookstore and immediately started looking for dinosaur books. You read.”
“That’s Mila.”
“And you?”
“Biographies mostly.”
“That tracks.”
His face appeared from behind the camera. “What does that mean?”
“I don’t know yet.”
“You said it like you did.”
“It feels right.”
“Anything else?”
“Thrillers sometimes. History. Whatever Mila brings me and decides we’re reading together.”
“So dinosaur books.”
“Lots of dinosaur books.”
“And dragons.”
His eyebrows lifted.
“You remembered.”
“Of course I remembered.”
The words came out before I thought about them.
Something passed over his face.
Small enough that I might have imagined it.
Then he smiled.
“She still hasn’t decided which one would win.”
“Dragon.”
“Absolutely not.”
