“Okay, talk later.”

“Sure. Let me speak with Ice.”

It takes a few seconds, and Ice is back on the line.

“Hey, boss.”

“Is she okay?”

“She’s fine. A little excited about going shopping and the skyline ride later tonight.”

“Make sure you are with her always,” I command. He must not leave her side.

“Got it.”

“Jonah’s men?” I ask.

“They are okay. They seem to understand she’s the assignment.”

“Good. Keep me posted throughout the day.”

“Got it, boss,” he says as I hang up.

I need deep black coffee. I shower, then step into the kitchen and find Chef Wayne. I’m surprised to see him here at this time.

“Good morning,” I say as I pour my black coffee, taking a sip without milk or sugar.

“Morning, boss. When is Lexi returning?” He asks

Whoa. No mincing of words, I guess.

“Why?” I ask instead.

“Too quiet around here, and no one to critique me. Even boring Ice isn’t here.” He whines

“I thought you didn’t like her critiquing you.”

“I do, because she lets me know how good or bad the food tastes in a sweet way. You and Ice just eat without feedback.”

“Uh…” I’m surprised.

“So, when is she back?” he asks again, eager.

“In two days,” I say.

“That’s two days too long,” he mutters.

Imagine how I feel lying in bed alone without her.

“I need to get going,” I say.

“Do you need me to make dinner for you?” he asks.

“Don’t know yet. I’ll have Grayson text you about that later today.”

“Okay, this sucks. You need to get her back,” he grumbles as I leave.

Getting into my car, it hits me that I didn’t eat. Chef is right. Unless the food is salty, I just eat and keep moving. Jola takes her time, enjoying the flavor and texture of everything he makes for her. Now that I think about it, he cooks the meals she likes and the dishes she wants to try. Fucking Wayne has been sweetening my girl up with his cooking. I chuckle, realizing the things I didn’t notice.
