Natalie comes back towards us. “Did you hear that?”
“Yep,” Liv says.
“She told him about today.”
“Yep.”
Natalie looks over her shoulder towards the car park. “Why?”
Liv shakes her head. “Don't know yet.”
Yet. That's the word I focus on. Because apparently I'm dating someone who is now part of a small-town surveillance operation.

“We need to tell Harper,” Natalie says.
Liv nods. “And Elsie.”
“And Luca.”
I look towards Luca, who's still standing only five metres away.
“Pretty sure Luca knows.”
Natalie ignores me. “Tonight?”
“Tonight,” Liv agrees.
“Are we investigating again tonight?” I ask.
Liv turns to me. “We?”
“I've seen the board. And did surveillance before.”
“That doesn't make you a full member.”
“I brought snacks last time.”
“That makes you catering.”
“Good to know where I stand.”
Tilly appears between us holding her balloon. “DAD.”
“What?”
“You haven't said if you like my unicorn.”
“I love your unicorn.”
“Good.” She turns to Liv.
“Ben says he can make a dinosaur.” Liv looks at Ben. I look at Ben. Ben is already inflating a green balloon.
