“That wasn’t a request.”

“You don’t know where the Keeper is,” Judy said. “You don’t know how long he’s been watching Rylie or whether he has someone monitoring the roads.”

“I’m not keeping her here.”

“The Last Stand Tavern is filled with former Army Rangers. Sheriff Tate controls local law enforcement. This is the safest place she could be until we know more.”

“You don’t know that.”

“Neither do you.”

Trigger stepped toward her.

Rylie caught his arm.

“Don’t.”

“He killed every woman in that photograph.”

“I know.”

“He isn’t getting near you.”

“Then listen to the detective who has been hunting him for eleven months.”

Trigger’s jaw tightened.

He looked at Judy.

“I’m taking my wife home.”

Judy held his gaze.

“Does the Keeper know where you live?”

Trigger didn’t answer.

“Are there woods around your property?”

“Yes.”

“How many ways can someone approach without being seen?”

His silence answered for him.

Judy pointed toward the ceiling.

“The tavern has rooms upstairs, limited access, cameras covering Main Street, and enough people downstairs to notice a stranger. Until we evaluate your house, Rylie stays here.”

“You don’t order my wife around.”

“She isn’t ordering me around,” Rylie said. “I’m staying.”

Trigger looked down at her.

“No.”

She lifted one eyebrow.
