“It’s unmarked.”
“Government plates. Three people in dark suits. You examined the welcome sign for twenty minutes.”
“We were there for ten.”
“Agnes will say twenty.”
My phone vibrated.
Captain Mills.
I looked at the name, then at the old camp brochure.
The Mills family.
Coincidences happened in investigations.
It usually didn’t announce itself this loudly.
I stepped away from the desk and answered.
“Langley.”
“Did you reach Eagle River?” Mills asked.
“We just arrived.”
“What have you found?”
I looked at Sheriff Tate.
He watched me.
“The symbol isn’t only the town sign. It belonged to an old summer camp.”
Silence followed.
It lasted less than a second.
Most people wouldn’t have noticed.
I did.
“What camp?” Mills asked.
“Camp Eagle River.”
Another pause.
“Never heard of it.”
I wrote his exact words in my notebook.
“Who owned it?” he asked.
“I’m still working on that.”
I didn’t look away from Sheriff Tate.
