But Jason will be happy I made an effort, so I do as I’m told.
It takes me at least ten minutes to get served, probably because I did absolutely nothing to get the bartender’s attention. Once I’ve ordered the drinks on their tab, I watch him pour simple syrup over mint leaves and crush them.
“She isn’t twenty-one,” I say when he reaches for the rum, ensuring this is the last time the girls ask me for drinks. Not that I care.
“Sure thing.” He grabs the vanilla instead, then tops it with soda water and a lime wedge. I don’t take my eyes off him as he pours 7Up into another glass filled with ice and covers the sides with grenadine.
I go to grab the drinks once he places the maraschino cherry, but someone slides up beside me and leans against the bar.
“Hey.”
I look up and find the blue eyes of a giant. He’s at least six foot four, with blond hair and a cocky smile that no doubt gets him all the girls. He looks at me like I’m a sure thing, which I could have been if there wasn’t a wolf with crossed hockey sticks on his jacket.
“Sorry, have to bring these back to my friends.”
“Can I buy you a drink?” he offers.
“I don’t do hockey players.” I don’t even pretend to be apologetic.
“Every rule has an exception,” he points out, flashing that smile and reaching over as if he’s about to tuck a loose strand of hair behind my ear, but I’m not into that romantic shit, and I know the only hair that isn’t up in my bun is a part of my bangs, which don’t look good separated.
“Not this one.” I shrug my shoulders and make my way back to the table where the girls are waiting.
“Was that Colton Beckford?” Christine asks when I sit.
“No idea.”
“He’s one of our top scorers.” Angela informs me.
“Since when are you into hockey?” She literally called it sports ball last time someone asked her to a game.
“So you do know who he is.” They both raise their eyebrows like they’ve caught me.
“I saw from his jacket that he plays. That’s it.”
“Which would make him a thousand times hotter if he wasn’t already oozing enough sex appeal to get you pregnant just by looking at him.” Angela looks at me like I’ve lost my mind.
“Oozing?” I scoff, though I can’t really argue with her assessment. He’s tall with an athletic build, a cocky smile that charms most…I’ve just learnt my lesson.
“I mean, he’s not Brooks, but you can’t go wrong with any of the guys on that team.” Angela fans herself while scanning the room.
“God, the things I would let Brooks do to me…” Christine sighs.
“Haven’t you been with Caleb since junior high?” I ask her.
“I’m in a relationship, Madison, not dead. What’s your excuse?”
“I don’t do hockey players.” I shrug and get an eye roll before the girls sip their drinks and I take out my phone to see if Jason is on his way.
