Meredith laughed as her belly fluttered at the intensity behind his words and the way he was looking at her. She knew what that look meant, had seen it many times over the years, and crossed her legs when the ache there increased. His gaze dipped, watching her do it, and he actually snarled.
His hand dropped to her knee and slid higher. “Just say the word and I’ll make it better.”
She grinned at him and covered his hand with hers, halting its slow progress. “We have to eat dinner. It’s tradition.”
His hand turned over and he threaded his fingers through hers as he waved a server over. “We’ll eat fast.”
Kryos’s big rough-skinned hand was wrapped around Meredith’s own as he led her from the diner. He said nothing as he carried on down the street like they were just any other human couple strolling along hand in hand. Every now and then he’d glance down at her, a small smile playing on his gorgeous lips and her heart would do a summersault.
You’d think after fifty-one years together, it would be impossible for her to love him more, but there was no peak, no cap—her heart seemed to have an endless capacity where her mate was concerned. Her love for him grew with each passing day.
“I love you,” she said when he glanced down at her again, unable to contain it a moment longer.
His eyes flashed and his hand flexed around hers.
Kryos never got sick of hearing her say it. It was like the first time, every time. Like she’d shone a beautiful light down on him whenever she said those three words.
“You ready to fly?” he asked, voice rough and utterly sexy.
She licked her lips. “Always.”
He led her down a side street, and she could feel the power flowing from him, his senses on high alert, searching out danger, always the warrior, always protective of his female. His hand tightened, and they turned down an alley by a cute little bakery.
The owners were in the small building now, music drifting out from an open window while they prepared food for the next day. The smells were amazing.
Kryos walked to the center of the alley and pulled off his shirt, tucking it into the back of his jeans. Meredith bit her lip at the sight of him as need fired through her.
He held out his hand, his wings appearing out of nowhere, snowy white and arched high above his shoulders. “Ready?”
She moved in, pressing her hand to his chest, then slid them down over his ridged abs. “You’re so beautiful,” she whispered. “God, I’ve never gotten used to it. I think I have, and then you’re standing in front of me like this, and I know I never will. Not ever.”
He stared down at her, his brown eyes glinting and hot with desire.
“Sweets,” he said all gravelly and needy, just one word, but it said so much.
She pressed her forehead to his bare chest, her hands moving to his sides as she pressed a kiss over his heart.
Kryos growled low, then started purring. “Kiss me.”
She lifted her head and ran her hands back up to his solid chest, over those wide pecs and massive shoulders, then across his biceps and corded forearms. He was a work of art.
She shook her head. “Not yet.”
The growls and purring melded together, that massive chest pumping harder. She hadn’t kissed him all day and she ached for it, for him. But she wanted to make them both wait, just a little longer.
“Sweets,” he said again with more urgency, deeper, rougher, hungrier.
A warning.
She ignored it and moved to his side, pressing a kiss to his heavy bicep before stepping behind him.
His big body stilled, because he knew what was coming, was anticipating it. She only made him wait a few seconds, when his breathing had grown impossibly ragged and the growls were growing in volume.
Placing her hands on the arch of his wings that sprouted high from the middle of his muscled back, she gently ran her fingers along the edge, over silky-smooth feathers. Her angel warrior trembled, his colossal frame shaking from the pleasure of it. Goose bumps lifted across his shoulders on her second pass, as she petted and lavished those gorgeous white wings with attention.
“Sweets,” he said again, so deep it was barely audible.
“God, Kryos, I love it when you wrap your wings around us while we make love,” she said as she slid her hand down the outer edge of the left one. “They’re so warm and silky against my bare skin.”
