“I didn’t sense it happening,” Roc said. “Weird.”

“Me either.” Chaos strode over.

Gunner right behind him, and when he smiled at Meredith in welcome, the scar through his upper lip made it look more like a frown.

Tobias looked the least intimidating right then, his long blond hair neatly tied back, a friendly smile curling his lips…until Kryos spotted demon blood splattering the t-shirt he wore under his jacket.

Jesus. They must look like a room full of monsters.

When a demi-demon gained their power, the knights sensed it, all of them. Like a kind of internal alarm. Then the race was on to get to them before the demons did. Demi and their powers were a hot commodity among the demons who had escaped Hell. And if the knights couldn’t get to them first, they became slaves, used and exploited for those powers. His brothers didn’t know Meredith was his mate, and he could only assume that was the reason only he was able to sense her when her powers kicked in.

He dragged a hand through his hair. “I think there’s a reason for that. And I’ll tell you about it after I get Meredith settled.”

“That makes no sense,” Chaos said frowning.

“It’s fine, Silas explained some things to me,” Kryos said.

Chaos crossed his arms, looking pissed. “Is this something I need to be concerned about?”

“No. It’s…a good thing. Trust me.” Chaos hated being out of the loop, especially when Silas was involved. The cryptic angel had their best interests at heart, but usually when he got involved it meant some kind of trouble was coming their way.

Chaos’s black eyes slid between Kryos and Meredith. “Come find me when you finish showing Meredith around.”

Kryos dipped his chin and steered her out the door and into the hall. She was quiet as they hit the stairwell, but she had to have a million questions. They reached the fourth floor, and before they went down to the third where she would be staying, for a little while, he wanted to show her where she could find him.

“This is where I stay. My room’s the third door on the right.”

She turned to him, eyes filled with fear. “What am I doing here, Kryos? What the hell is going on?”

Shit.

Taking her hand, he led her to his room because she was moments from losing it. She’d been holding it together, but she was about to break and she didn’t even know the worst of it yet. For her, anyway. For him, this meant he got to keep her, and selfish asshole that he was, this pleased the hell out of him.

He opened the door and she took a couple of steps inside, then stopped, looking around his barren room.

“We’re still working on the place. Your room is a lot nicer than this,” he said quickly.

She said nothing, just waited for him to start talking. He motioned to the bed and she blinked at him.

“Just to sit. I think you should be sitting down for this, sweets.”

He quickly straightened the covers and kicked his laundry under the bed. Shakily, she made her way over and sat stiffly on the end.

Kryos sat beside her, angling her way. “I told you I’m part angel. You believe me?”

She rubbed her hands down her thighs, causing the fabric of her dress to crinkle. “I saw your wings, we flew here. How can I doubt it?”

There was fear in her voice, but not disbelief, which was a good start. Though, the last thing he wanted was for her to be afraid. There was nothing for him to do but jump straight in. “The men who attacked you and…David…” He had to bite back a growl just saying that fucker’s name. “They were demons, and they sought you out because you’re special, Meredith.”

“Demons?” Her throat worked.

“Yeah.”

“You’re an angel and they were demons?”

“That’s right.”

She stood and paced to the boarded-up window and back. “And what am I, Kryos? You said I’m special, and I…” She chewed her lip, her eyes sliding back to him. “I’ve never fit in, never belonged, never felt…normal, not once in my whole life. Are you saying I’m not human?”
