Meredith again tried to back away and bumped into David, who had shoved her in front of him.
“Do you know why we’ve come for you?” the skinny one said, looking at her.
“Me?” she choked out.
“Oh yes, and we’re going to have a lot of fun, the four of us, before we hand you over.”
Her heart was pounding so hard she was light-headed. “What are you talking about? Hand me over to who?”
The skinny, black-eyed man looked at David. “And what are we going to do with you?”
The other two men pounced, one grabbing her, the other David. She struggled, trying to pull free, but the man holding her was too strong. His fingernails were long and sharp and dug into her skin. Meredith dry-wretched, and she sucked in a desperate breath. He smelled like…like death. The same awful smell when you walk past roadkill, but so much worse.
David struggled as well, until the man holding him pressed a knife to his throat. David whimpered, then started to cry. “Y-you said you came for M-Meredith. Please…please, let me go. You don’t need me, right? You have her.” Then he peed his pants.
Meredith stared at him, stunned.
“You’re going to give us your female without a fight?”
David nodded as more tears streamed down his face.
“Looks like you’re all ours, demi,” the man holding David said to her, then licked the side of David’s face and shoved him away. “Run, human, run. Maybe I’ll let you get away from me.”
David took off instantly, sprinting away, and didn’t look back. Leaving her there alone with three men who made it clear they were going to hurt her.
They were all focused on her now. The one who had been holding David grinned, while the other two looked at her with such outward hatred, fear paralyzed her.
The man holding her pressed his mouth to her ear. “I get her first—”
A heavy thud echoed behind them.
The other two men hissed like wild cats. And the one still holding her, knife pressed against her side, forced her to turn, his fingernails digging deeper into her skin.
Something…someone massive loomed in the shadows.
He stepped forward and Meredith froze.
Kryos stood there, shirtless, his muscled body bulging with aggression. There were knives strapped to his chest and a sword gripped in one fist—and wings. Oh god. Pure white wings were settling behind him, arching high above his shoulders.
“Kryos?” she whispered.
His brown gaze, usually warm, was hard and terrifying and didn’t waver from the males surrounding her. “You will let her go. Now.”
One of the men chuckled. “Now why would we do that, knight?”
“Because if you don’t, you won’t just die, you’ll die screaming.”
Her captor pressed his cheek to Meredith’s and nipped her jaw. “There’s three of us and only one of you.”
Kryos shrugged a massive shoulder. “That’s true.”
“Leave,” the man holding her said. “Or you’ll be the one who dies screaming.”
Kryos stood unmoving for several long seconds, the men not looking away from him, waiting to see what he’d do. Finally, Kryos sheathed the sword he was holding and the wings on his back extended…then he shot up, vanishing into the starless sky.
A cry exploded from her. Oh god, he’d left her. He’d left her as well.
“You think he’s really gone?” one of the men said.
