Kryos leaned against the wall. “You talk to Silas lately?”

“I avoid that fucker, I don’t go looking for him.” Chaos planted his hands on his hips. “Why?”

Silas was an angel and had been charged with “watching over them.” In other words, making sure they stayed on the straight and narrow and didn’t succumb to their inner demons, go mad, and wreak destruction across the city.

It was a tough job, but somebody had to do it.

Silas was there to guide them, if need be. The only problem was, more often than not, he couldn’t tell them much of anything. Angels, including Silas, were often forced to give the whole “what will be, will be” party line. Chaos had butted heads with the angel more times than Kryos could count because of it.

“Haven’t seen him around in a while, is all.” Kryos decided against sharing too much at this point, not until he knew if there was a problem—if there was something wrong with him.

Because something was up. He sure as fuck didn’t feel like himself, and the way he reacted, behaved around Meredith, yeah, something was way off. So he shrugged.

“You wanna spar,” Laz said and winked at Chaos. “I need a challenge. Having trouble finding one.”

Tobias chuckled, but had the decency to try and hide it behind a cough.

Chaos tossed his shirt aside and waved Lazarus forward. “Let’s go, dickhead. Round two.” Then he pointed at Tobias. “I’m kicking your ass next.”

Tobias grinned. “You can try, brother.”

Kryos left them to beat the shit out of each other and headed to the roof of the warehouse. It was windy, and the sky was starless, heavy with dark clouds. A storm was brewing.

He closed his eyes and reached out to Silas—like a prayer, he guessed, asking the male for guidance. But when the angel answered, he didn’t just offer a sign or whatever, he stopped by in person.

Kryos breathed in the heavy night air as the wind whipped around him. The creak and groan of the warehouse providing a backing track.

What was Meredith doing right now? Serving a customer? Standing behind the counter in her cute uniform, hips swaying, humming as she listened to the radio?

The more he thought about her, the more he felt her, as if she were right there. Christ, her addictive scent still filled his head, and he could feel her pressed up against him, the taste of her sweet mouth on his tongue—

“You sure you want to talk? Or would you rather I leave you alone with your…thoughts,” Silas said and chuckled.

Kryos opened his eyes and scowled. “I seriously wish you wouldn’t do that.” The angel could see and hear what was in their heads, the nosy fucker.

“I like to know what I’m flying into.” Wind whipped through Silas’s short black and gold-streaked hair, catching in his golden wings. He slid his hands into the pockets of his jeans, making the battle scene tattoos on his muscular arms shift with the movement. “You have questions?”

“I do, but you already know why you’re here, right?” Kryos said.

“Yep.” Silas smiled. “I also have the answers you so desperately want.”

Kryos huffed out a mirthless laugh. “Let me guess, and you’d really love to share them with me but your hands are tied? Or some such bullshit.”

Silas’s low chuckle was snatched away by the wind, but there was no missing the laughter in his eyes. Jesus, the sheer happiness that radiated from the angel lifted goose bumps all over Kryos’s skin.

“What the hell’s wrong with you?” He had never seen that particular look on Silas’s face, and he’d known the guy for a seriously long time.

“Nothing’s wrong, Kryos. Today is a good day, a day I’ve been waiting a very long time for.”

“And what day is that?” Kryos shifted, not sure he trusted the vibes coming off the male, and that wide grin was starting to freak him out.

“Do you remember when you first learned what you are, what your purpose was?”

“Of course.”

“Do you remember what I told you?” Silas asked.

“You’ll have to narrow it down; you talk a lot.”
