He flinched.
Selfishly taking what he wanted tonight had put her at risk.
He shoved his fingers through his hair. “I’m sorry.” He took another step back. “I got carried away.”
“No, I wanted you to kiss me. Kryos…”
“You should leave,” he choked out, while everything in him screamed for her to stay.
She stood there, still leaning against the car, lips swollen from his kiss, cheeks flushed, breathing heavily. Her scent was stronger and so fucking good he wanted to drown in it. He wanted to move back to her, drop to his knees, and bury his face right there at the source. Shove up her skirt, tear down her panties, and—
“Kryos?”
“I need to leave.”
She didn’t say anything.
Neither did he.
They stood there, staring at each other, wanting the opposite. Only her desire for him wasn’t real, it wasn’t something she had control over.
“Go,” he said gently.
She jumped like he’d roared the words at her, spun, and got in her car. A moment later she was driving out of the lot, out onto the street.
He rubbed his hands over his face and growled.
What the fuck is wrong with you?
And there was something wrong, he was sure of it. This wasn’t him. He didn’t do shit like this.
He didn’t know for sure if the way he was feeling was Meredith or something else, something inside him. But he couldn’t take much more of it—of nights tossing and turning, of coming to this diner every damn night to torture himself, of getting off every day thinking about her.
He just couldn’t do it anymore. He was starting to think he was losing his mind.
Pulling off his shirt, he tucked it into the back of his jeans. His wings snapped open at his back, pure white and glowing in the dim light, then with two heavy beats, they caught the wind and he took to the sky.
There was only one person who might have answers—if there were any to be had—and if the infuriating angel was willing and able to tell him.
It was a long shot, but he had to try.
Chapter 3
Kryos walked across the cracked concrete floor of the warehouse, with Meredith and the kiss they’d shared the night before playing on repeat in his head.
Wind whistled through one of the cracked windows of the cavernous lower level. A cold draft blowing across the back of his neck. They’d moved into the six-story industrial monstrosity four months ago, and so far only the third floor had been renovated enough to be habitable—the floor they’d allocated for the demi-demons they brought in for training. The rest of the place was cold and drafty as hell.
Still, better than some of their previous dwellings. Kryos had a good feeling about this one, though. With any luck, when it was done it would be their home for a good long while.
Chaos and Lazarus, two of his brothers, trained on the other side of the massive room, their grunts and growls echoing off the iron walls. While another, Tobias, heckled from the peanut gallery.
Kryos made his way over.
Chaos dragged a hand over his newly split lip, and Lazarus smirked, bright green eyes sparkling. It wasn’t often they got the best of Chaos. The male was hard, focused, and relentless, just a few of the reasons they’d chosen him to lead them.
Laz gave Kryos a chin lift, and Tobias met his gaze, cool blue eyes lit with humor.
“What’s up?” Chaos asked, tagging his shirt from the concrete floor and wiping the sweat from his face and over his shaved and tattooed head.
