She took a sip of her beer. Since her transition, alcohol didn’t affect her like it used to, not that she’d had a lot since, just the odd beer with Rocco, but it did nothing. She might as well be drinking water. “I know. I could almost make myself believe everything that happened before was a dream and we’re just two normal people enjoying date night.”

Rocco studied her. “Is that what you wish we were? Just normal people?”

“Sometimes, but then I see you looking all sexy with weapons strapped to your body, or watch you fuck up a demon, and I get over it.” She grinned and toyed with his fingers. “Normal is overrated.”

He lifted her hand and kissed it. “Once this is over, maybe we’ll work on having a few more nights like this.”

“I’d like that.”

A woman walked over and put their burgers in front of them. She was so busy ogling Rocco, she knocked over Kyler’s drink.

“Oh sorry! I’ll get you another one,” she said and rushed off.

“You have that poor woman all flustered,” Kyler said to him. “She can’t take her eyes off you.”

Rocco shrugged, his gaze moving around the room again. “Didn’t notice.”

And Kyler knew he meant it. He only had eyes for her. “She’s very pretty. Is it normal to want to tear her face off for eyeing my male?”

His gaze came back to her. She expected him to smile, or tease her, but he didn’t do either of those things. “I don’t see other females like that, Kyler. It’s not some line, you are the only female who can hold my attention. I want only you. I will always want only you. And yes, it is normal to feel territorial over me, if you had any idea what was going through my head right now, what I wanted to do to all the males in here looking at you, wishing you were theirs, imagining being with you, you wouldn’t be able to stomach that burger.”

Kyler nodded and gave his hand another squeeze. “So we’re talking blood and guts and shit all over the place?”

He nodded, and his grin came back. “Intestines as a chandelier, genitals as centerpieces for every fucking table, baby.”

A surprised laugh burst from her. “So bloodthirsty.” She winked at him. “I don’t hate it.” Then she took a big bite of her burger.

Rocco flashed her that gorgeous grin of his. “You know it, pumpkin.”

They ate their meals, staying alert, but Kyler let herself enjoy the moment. A quiet moment in all the chaos that was their lives. Yes, they were here looking for a weapon to stab Diemos in the heart with, but she was with her mate, and they were away from Roxburgh, away from all the pain and fear and uncertainty, just for a little while.

Kyler kept hold of his hand as she watched couples head to the dance floor when a slow song started. It was getting late and people were becoming a little more free and easy after a few drinks.

Rocco stood, suddenly. “Come on.”

“Are we going?”

He shook his head. “Nope, we’re dancing.”

“Really?” They’d never danced, not like this. She didn’t think dancing while flying through the sky counted, despite how utterly awesome it had been.

He didn’t answer, just tugged her to her feet and led her to the middle of the floor, where he pulled her in close and wrapped his arms around her. They swayed together, his big hands moving over her body.

Rocco leaned in and pressed his face to the crook of her neck and breathed deep.

The song ended, and she looked up at him. “What should we do now?”

He cupped the side of her face. “Let’s just keep dancing.”

She nodded and laid her head against his chest.

That sounded like an excellent idea to her.

Chapter 29

“Bring the flashlight closer, pumpkin,” Rocco said.

Kyler moved in closer, brushing against him, and he had to take a steadying breath. Having his mate pressed up against him on that dance floor most of the night had done things to him, and he was finding it hard to focus.
