Her eyes flashed and she lifted her chin stubbornly, responding like he knew she would.

“Did you have a nice night off?” he said, keeping the conversation neutral. He needed her eyes on him, her attention, to hear her voice. “Do anything…fun?”

Her eyes stayed on his and her nostrils flared, a little color hitting her cheeks.

What the fuck was that?

Finally, Chaya shrugged. “It was okay.”

She was lying, and she wasn’t doing as good a job at masking her emotions tonight. He drew them in, tasting every perfect morsel. Fear, excitement, lust. That was what she was feeling when she thought about her night off.

She was seeing someone.

An ugly feeling twisted in his gut. “Who is it?” he said, unable to stop himself even though he knew it was none of his damn business.

Her brows lifted. “Who what?”

Brent straightened. “Who are you seeing?”

She jolted. “What?”

Keep your damned mouth shut. Don’t say it. “You met with another male last night.” The incubus in him wanted to know so he could kill whoever dared to touch what was his. Holding back those words, as fucked up as they were, had been an impossibility.

She straightened her shoulders. “How is that any of your business?”

Her reply, of course, was what he’d expected. “Chaya…”

She slid her tray of drinks off the bar and spun away, disappearing into the crowded club. Brent stayed where he was. He realized in that moment that his demon side had staked some kind of claim over Chaya and he couldn’t leave, his feet glued to the spot. The idea of someone else touching her had made him want to commit an act of violence.

One of the reasons he had taken so long during his training to gain a semblance of control was that incubus/human parings were rare. The breed of demon was too strong for a mere human and it usually ended in a horror story. Even worse than Brent’s own.

His worked more like the knights’. His demon side constantly fought to overpower his humanity, to make him into a creature of lust and sex, gorging on emotion.

It was hard to resist.

But for once they both wanted the same thing. Chaya. Only Brent knew why that couldn’t happen. The incubus didn’t give a fuck.

Denying it, fighting it, was getting harder and harder. The demon side of him was a predator, and predators killed to protect what was theirs.

He was in trouble, there was no doubt about it.

And when she came back to the bar to hand in her next order, he had the strong and sudden urge to bury his face in the crook of her neck and inhale her scent, to rub it on his skin and his on her.

“Hey, beautiful,” a male said, coming up beside her.

Chaya smiled but ignored the guy. A shifter of some breed. Canine most likely.

He moved in closer and did what Brent had just been desperate to do. He breathed her in deep, then put his arm around her shoulders, touching her, putting his scent on her. She grabbed her tray and tried to pull away, but he grabbed her wrist, making her let it go.

“Come on now, sexy, I just want to spend some time with you over in one of those dark corners. What do you say?”

“Let go now,” she said, the kind of command in her voice that Brent had fantasized about since he met her.

The guy looked taken aback for a split second, but Brent was already moving. Fuck, he’d never felt this ruled by his demon DNA, and that was saying a lot after everything he’d been through.

He grabbed the dog by the scruff off his shirt and wrenched him back. Chaya’s tray went flying, drinks and glass covering the floor. Brent didn’t give a shit. He slammed his fist into the male’s face over and over again. He took a couple of hits from the guy, but he barely noticed through the red rage riding him and rushed the male, taking him down to the ground. Brent hit him and kept on hitting him until the male stopped fighting back. “You touched what’s mine, asshole,” he growled in his face. “You ever touch her again and I’ll kill you.”

Someone grabbed him from behind and pulled him back. Two of the bouncers held him off the guy while another carried the unconscious male out of the club.
