Chaya shook her head. Lying was easier with just one of them watching her. “They were definitely intimidating, though.”

“Yes. Best we try to avoid them next time. Once Ian sets his sights on someone, he’s not easily swayed. Tuesdays and Thursdays are his usual nights here,” Victor said before taking a sip of his drink. “You’d be wise to remember that.” He placed a hand on her lower back. “Let me see you out.”

He was rushing her from the club, which meant she was in danger from Ian and his brothers despite what he said. She let Victor guide her back to the exit. Why was he helping her? Protecting her? Because that’s what he seemed to be doing. Would the kind of demon capable of controlling his own kind, of forcing them to do sick and twisted things, care about the well-being of a demi he barely knew?

He walked her right to the elevator.

“Will you come back?” he said when they came to a stop.

“Maybe?” Right then she was just desperate to get the hell gone.

“I’d like to see you again,” he said. “I’ll be here next Monday. I hope to see you here then.”

She gave a noncommittal nod and rushed into the elevator when the doors finally opened.

“It was lovely seeing you again,” he said as the doors slid shut.

Chaya collapsed against the wall, her entire body shaking as adrenaline pumped through her veins. With shaking hands, she sent Grace a message telling her that she’d left and shoved her phone back in her purse.

Grace’s reply came when she hit the street.

Grace: I’ll be in touch with a time and place for us to meet.

Chapter 7

Brent frowned as Chaya came to the bar for the second time, grabbed her order, and headed off to deliver it.

She was ignoring him.

He found he didn’t like that, not one bit. She’d come in late for work and now she was pretending he didn’t exist. The last time he’d seen her, he’d come in his pants from just sitting close to her, and she had apparently gotten over her feelings for him completely, if her current attitude was anything to go by.

He was well aware the shit floating around in his head might be something a lovesick teen might be thinking. He could no more control his thoughts than he could his dick or his feelings for the sexy demi-demon currently heading back toward the bar.

Christ, he crumbled around this woman, fucking fell apart.

Brent leaned more heavily on the bar, took a skip of his Coke, and tried not to stare at her.

Yeah, right.

Not looking at Chaya when she was near was like starting your day without a hit of caffeine.

She was wearing a tight knee-length skirt tonight, a black, stretchy, silky fabric that clung to her ample hips and thighs and the sweet, soft curve to her belly. He wanted to kiss it.

Kiss every inch of her soft, fragrant skin.

The end of the bar where she’d been getting her orders filled was full, and she was forced to come closer to him, the end he’d been propping up since opening, unable to have her out of his sight.

Which meant she had no choice but to acknowledge him. Her gaze darted in his direction and held for a long second. “Hey,” she said.

Hey.

One simple, meaningless word, and his heart started thundering in his chest.

He took another sip of his drink. “Hey,” he said back and smirked.

She wanted to slap him when he smirked. It was hard to miss. Maybe that was why he did it. He wanted her to slap him out of this constant state of confusion and hunger for a female he couldn’t have.

Unfortunately, that would have the opposite effect.
