Unfortunately for Chaya, recently they’d led her to him. And his own emotional state was, well, in the eloquent words of Rocco…fucked.
He climbed in beside her, and as soon as he pulled the door closed he was bathed in her scent. Spicy and rich, almost as intoxicating as the taste of her emotions when she didn’t lock him out. God, he hated that. His powers were a burden, but he’d grown used to knowing what people were feeling. It provided him with a level of comfort as well as a way to feed the incubus side of himself.
He hated that Chaya was purposely keeping him out, keeping him at a distance. It was selfish to want that from her, but he wanted it all the same.
“So what was that back there?” he said as he drove toward the gates. They shuddered open and he hit the street.
“I thought I made it pretty clear,” she said, eyes aimed forward and purposely not once coming to him.
He hated that as well.
“Jesus. You really want to fight in this war?” he said, and just saying the words sent fear and dread through him so hard and fast he couldn’t fucking see straight.
She shrugged. “Not necessarily. But I think demi need to be given a chance to do more, to defend themselves as well.”
“You can defend yourself. No one is stopping you. Maybe you should start coming to the self-defense classes they’re doing here. It’s going on the attack that the knights want to discourage. There’s already a group of vigilante demi out there causing trouble. That’s more than enough for the knights to deal with.”
She turned to him, and even though she was pissed off, he soaked it up, letting the warmth that her gaze gave him lift tingles all over his skin.
Her hands rested on her thighs and she slid them up the soft leather to her knees and back.
He had to hold back a groan.
“The way I hear it, those vigilantes saved Chaos’s life not so long ago,” she said.
Brent frowned. “Who told you that?”
“Mia. And she would know.”
He wasn’t sure what to say without sounding like a hypocrite. He felt the same as Chaya, mostly anyway, which was why, though he hadn’t actually joined the fight, he did know who was behind it and kept it to himself. It put him in a tough position but he felt loyalty to both the knights and the demi making a stand. But he’d sure as fuck prefer that Chaya wasn’t involved.
“Chaos is just trying to protect you,” he said in the end, because that was the truth. The knights had been fighting for hundreds of years, making sacrifices all for the good of mankind.
“I know,” she said. “And I appreciate that, but this might be bigger than them, and if it is, they need to accept help for the same reason.”
She was right, but they couldn’t solve the troubles in this city right then in this car, and the last thing he wanted to do was fight with her.
So he kept his mouth shut. They drove in silence for the next fifteen minutes. And despite the conversation they’d just had, he couldn’t ignore the current zapping between them. It nailed him over and over again and he absorbed it like junkie, taking whatever dregs he could get.
His cock was impossibly hard and his skin felt almost painful it was so sensitive. He wanted to tear his clothes off and just fucking bask in it, in her and what she was sending out. It was like she was so full with emotion it couldn’t be contained and lapped over the edges of her psyche like gentle waves washing over him. He’d never experienced anything like it before. Like a tickle below the skin you couldn’t pinpoint to scratch and relieve it. Hovering at the breaking point of unimaginable pleasure. And because she was still holding back, the break, the fall, wasn’t ever going to come.
Sweat slid down between his shoulder blades and he was close to writhing in his damn seat. He tried to focus on the road, but he realized when he watched Chaya squeeze her lush thighs together that he wasn’t the only one affected by the close proximity.
Fuck.
The intensity just kept growing and he didn’t know how much more he could take. He was fucking shaking. Could she see it? Could she see the way she affected him? That he was close to begging her to give him more, something—anything—to relieve the state of pleasure and pain she had him suspended in without even trying.
Her apartment came into view and he had to grit his teeth so they didn’t chatter in his damn head.
He finally pulled over and watched as her trembling hands fumbled with the seat belt. No, he wasn’t the only one affected, not by a long shot. She turned to him, her dark brown eyes clashing with his, and he sucked in a rough breath, which only fed him more of her scent, now tinged with her lust. Fuck, he was this close to begging her to fuck him in his seat.
But then she tore her eyes away. “Thanks for the ride. I’ll see you at work tomorrow.” She shoved the door open and climbed out.
As she did, she dropped her block. Let it fucking collapse. And every emotion, all the hunger and pain and frustration and affection she was feeling came at him. So much, too much, washed over Brent, giving him the peak, the fall, he’d been hovering above.
He couldn’t form a reply and she didn’t wait, oblivious to what was happening to him as she shut the door and strode away. He moaned as he watched her, and, yeah, writhed in his seat, hips moving, sweating, skin prickling, cock pulsing. He gripped the steering wheel so tight it groaned. He cursed. He needed release. Now.
With one fumbling hand, he grabbed for the keys and yanked them out of the ignition, flicked open the small switchblade there, and dragged the blade across his forearm.
