“Your sister’s waiting, Chase. We don’t have time to talk now.”

“I know, but there’s one thing we can do.”

“What is it?”

“Exchange phone numbers.”

She laughed and then reached in her purse and pulled out her phone. “What’s your number?”

He rattled it off and watched her enter it. “Send me a text when you get in so I’ll have your number.”

“Okay.”

Somehow he managed to carry all his sister’s bags to the front door while Callie walked by his side.

When they reached their porches, he paused. “I wish we could spend more time together tonight, but…”

“Miranda’s here. I understand.”

“Soon, though, okay?”

She nodded.

He glanced down at her mouth, wishing he could kiss it, but he was afraid it was too soon.

In a surprise move, Callie went up on her tiptoes and kissed his cheek. “I’m glad you’re back,” she said. “Now, go inside and be nice to your sister!”

Chapter 31

Callie didn’t see much of Chase for the next few days, but she had plenty to do. Her muse was back, and she immediately went to work writing again. Oftentimes she’d work outside on the patio, where she could feel the breeze and enjoy the view. Overall, the writing conditions were ideal, and she’d made a lot of progress.

Since she and Chase had exchanged phone numbers, they’d been texting regularly. Most of the texts were simple, such as him asking how her writing was coming and her asking what he and Miranda were up to.

He’d been apologetic about his sister taking up so much of his time, but Callie understood. She missed him, though, and no amount of texting could make up for not seeing or talking to him in person.

One night, he called her instead of texting. It was late, and she’d been in bed reading.

“Hey. Is this too late to call?” he asked.

“Why are you whispering?”

“Because Miranda’s right across the hall.”

Callie giggled. “It’s not too late. I was just lying here reading.” And thinking of you.

“Me too.”

“One of your crime novels?”

“No. One of yours.”

“Oh.” She shouldn’t have been surprised since he’d admitted it, but it still caught her off guard.

“I have to admit, I’m a little…keyed up now.”

She laughed. “One of those chapters, huh?”

“Mm-hmm. How do you do it? I don’t mean do it. I mean write about it.”
