“Quick question. Have you heard of an author named Callie Cooper?”

“The romance author?”

“Yeah.”

“Of course I have. I read her whole series. Why?”

Chase sat down on the edge of his bed and shoved a hand through his hair. “You’re never going to believe this.”

“Try me.”

“She’s here.”

“Here where? There? At your condo?”

“Not my condo, but right next door. I met her. We went out to dinner.”

“You’re kidding me!”

“Why would I make that up?”

“I don’t know. Tell me everything. What’s she like? Is she as pretty as in her picture? I heard that authors doctor up their photos so they look younger.”

Chase rolled his eyes. “She’s actually prettier than her photo.”

“Ohmigod. Are you…dating her?”

“No.”

“But you went out to dinner.”

“Yes, as neighbors and…friends.”

“Hold up. You don’t have any female friends.”

“Well, I do now. Callie Cooper, the romance author.”

“This is so cool! Wait until I tell…”

“Stop right there, little sister. You can’t tell anyone about this.”

“What? Why not?”

“Because she doesn’t know I know, and I don’t think she wants me to know.”

“I’m confused.”

He sighed. “Me too.”

“Why wouldn’t she want you to know?”

“Good question. That’s partly why I’m calling. I need some advice.”

“Hold on. I think we have a bad connection. You’re asking me for advice?”

“Yes, smartass.”

“Well, hurry up. I have to get back to work.”
