I pulled my phone from my pocket and walked toward the kitchen while it rang.

Sol answered after a couple of rings.

“Hey.”

Just hearing her voice softened something inside me.

“Hey. Everything good?”

“Yeah. I was about to get in the shower.” There was a brief rustle on her end before she asked, “How’s Halo?”

I glanced through the doorway toward the couch.

“Spoiled.”

From the living room, Sugga stage-whispered loud enough for the entire damn house to hear, “Tell her he lying!”

Sol immediately laughed.

“Is that Sugga?”

“Unfortunately.”

“I heard that!” Sugga yelled.

Sol laughed harder, and I found myself smiling at the sound.

“Mama wants to know if Halo can stay the night.”

Her laughter faded into surprise.

“Stay the night?”

“Yeah. But you can say no. Don’t let her bully you.”

“I heard that too!” Sugga shouted.

I closed my eyes and shook my head.

Sol went quiet for a moment, and I could almost picture her worrying her bottom lip while she thought about it.

“Halo’s okay?”

“Knocked out on Mama’s chest.”

Another short pause followed.

“Then… yeah. She can stay.”

“You sure?”

“Yeah.” Her voice softened. “I trust your mom.”

She hesitated.

“And I trust you.”

That word landed harder than she knew.
