“Why?”

“I was working on Miss Marsh’s case.”

“Bet Eric wasn’t thrilled about that,” Connor said. “He’s got a real thing for you.”

Selena studied his profile. “You sound jealous.”

Connor said nothing.

The road curved. He slowed for a farm truck coming the other way, waited until it passed, then accelerated again.

Selena smiled to herself. “You don’t have to worry about me with Eric.”

“I’m not worried,” Connor said. “You can do what you want. We’re divorced.”

“Good.”

“I just asked about the movie.”

“Of course,” Selena said.

Connor gave her a brief glance and then stared back at the road.

“Besides,” Selena continued, “it’s not me you have to worry about with Eric.”

That got his attention.

“Why?” Connor asked.

“Your sister.”

“Jessie?”

“The one and only.”

Connor frowned. “What about Jessie?”

“I think she likes him.”

He shook his head almost immediately. “No.”

Selena laughed softly. “It wouldn’t be all bad.”

“That’s the last thing she needs after rehab,” Connor said. “Someone with their head in the clouds like that.”

“Eric’s a good guy.”

Connor made a sound that conveyed disagreement without becoming a word.

“He is,” Selena said. “He’s not the person you remember from high school.”

“A leopard never changes its spots.”

“You did.”

The answer quieted the car.

Connor kept his gaze forward.
