His hand shifted toward hers.
Selena took it.
Connor’s fingers closed weakly around her hand.
“I need to help them find him,” she said.
Connor’s fingers tightened around hers.
“Help Chuck. Tell him what I saw. But don’t go after this man yourself.”
“Connor...”
“He came through the corn before I could turn. I had a gun in my hand, Selena.”
She stopped.
“Promise me.”
Selena watched his fingers gripping hers. He was struggling to stay awake and still waiting for an answer.
“I promise.”
Even as she said it, she was thinking about going to Nora’s house.
Connor relaxed slightly into the pillow.
“Good.”
“You need to sleep.”
“Wait.” Connor kept hold of her hand. “There’s something I should’ve told you.”
“It can wait.”
“I keep doing that.”
Selena settled back into the chair.
“Morimer recorded the six thousand I gave him,” Connor said. “He’s threatening to release it and make it look like a payoff.”
She went still. “That’s what Ray was getting at?”
“Maybe. Morimer wanted Malone’s shut. Said he’d send men to hurt the owner if I refused.”
“What did you do?”
“I went there yesterday. Found blocked exits and called the fire marshal’s office. Their deputy inspected it and issued a temporary closure.”
Selena’s heart sank. What have you gotten yourself into, Connor?
“Were the violations real?” she asked.
“Yes. But I went because Morimer told me to.”
Selena loosened her hand without withdrawing it. Connor watched her, waiting.
“Does anyone else know about the threats?” she asked.
