The path narrowed.

Outside the maze, sirens approached from several directions. Their sound rose and fell as the corn blocked it.

Connor slowed.

A dry stalk moved to his left.

He swung the pistol toward it.

Nothing.

Another stalk shifted behind him.

Connor turned.

Empty path.

The killer could cross between rows wherever he wanted. The maze only controlled people who obeyed its layout.

Connor stepped sideways until his shoulder touched the corn.

He listened.

Most of the screaming was farther away now. Visitors were getting out.

A rustle came ahead.

Connor raised the pistol.

“Come out with your hands where I can see them.”

No response.

He moved forward.

Ten feet.

Another five.

The path bent right.

Connor rounded it carefully.

No one.

A narrow opening had been forced through the corn on the left. Broken stalks leaned inward.

Connor approached.

Something dark moved beyond them.

“Stop!”

He pushed through.

A second path opened on the other side.

Empty.
