“Agreed.” He leaned his chin on my shoulder and slid his arms around my waist. “You know who else is beautiful?” I smiled and lifted my chin for a kiss. We all waved and stood watching as they left. Doc Roberts and Sloane headed toward the lake.

“Well,” Paul smiled, “I’d love to spend more time with you right now, but I have to go.”

“I understand.” I pulled away. “I know you guys have a lot to do.”

“We do, but look, we should make an appearance in town this evening, make sure we’re seen,” he raised a brow, “just in case.”

“Okay,” I pushed my nerves aside, “just let me know when, and I’ll be ready.”

I spent the rest of the afternoon running through my footage, Zack’s footage, and some of Shadow’s footage, thanks to Cole. I began to compile something special for that rat bastard, Bruno.

Leaning back, I stretched out my shoulders and felt a pop in my neck that relieved some tension. I wasn’t used to sitting so long. Usually, my work kept me on my feet most of the day, running to the next destination or chasing down another lead. I missed my old life, but I didn’t miss all that came along with it except my old friends. I decided I should check in with one in particular to make sure he was still on schedule.

As the call connected, I pushed away from the table and stood to look out over the lake and saw Keith and Mike outside. Keith was pointing at the mountain across the water.

“I was wondering when I’d hear from you again,” Sully purred over the line.

“How’s it going south of the border?” I asked with a smile in my voice.

He laughed. “It’s been very quiet since you’ve been keeping Bruno’s attention up there.”

“Happy I could help,” I said sarcastically. “So, you got my last text?”

“I did, but I wasn’t sure if I should text back, given your present company.”

I ran my finger along the smooth oak lining the window. Nothing had been spared when they built Shadows. “I can understand that. Just know that if you avoid those two tunnels and stick to the route I suggested, within the days I told you, you’ll be left alone. Trust me, all attention will be in Rosarito and New Mexico."

“I’m putting a lot of trust in you, Nicole—”

“And have I ever given you a reason to think otherwise?”

“No, you haven’t,” he admitted.

“Right.” I leaned my back against the wall. “Then make your deal, move your product, and stop questioning the one person who has been trustworthy from the very start.”

He sighed. “You’re sexy when you’re bossy.”

“I’m sexy all the time, Sully,” I said in a husky voice. I needed to keep up my persona. “Now, do you have anything for me?”

“I heard from Bruno yesterday. He hasn’t called in a while.”

That caught my interest. “Yeah, what did he have to say?”

“Well, for one thing, he said you were working for the DEA.”

I let out a laugh. “And the pope too.”

He joined me in my laughter. “That was my reaction, too. Christ, he’s so stupid.”

“Well, that’s nothing new. It’s why you were always my favorite,” I tossed in, hoping he’d share more.

“Well, I hope to stay your favorite, but I’m sorry, my friend, I must go. I have a place to be, and sadly, it’s not with a beautiful woman like yourself.”

“Take care, Sully.”

“You as well.”

I tapped my nail on the phone. I felt something was off with that call. Bruno hadn’t shared much with Sully. He didn’t trust him, so why call him now? Did he know we still talked? Did he suspect Sully was up to something?
