I didn’t mind offering up my blood, but something told me I wouldn’t enjoy whatever else they might need of me. I really wished I could ask my aunt what happened here. If she was even still alive. I hadn’t even met her, but I felt closer to her than ever now that I shared the same fate.

The door clicked shut, leaving me alone with Jacob and Harland.

“So,” Jacob began, shooting me a flirtatious smile. “Ready to spend the next twenty-nine years with us?”

That stopped me cold. “I thought it was only until I turned fifty?” And then whatever normally happened, would happen.

Jacob shook his head. “The vow is for twenty-nine years, no matter what. You just got a few more years of freedom before your time started.”

So, I would either live longer than any other sacrifice before me, or I would have to wait for longer before finding out just what happens when the time is up. I’d had a brief thought that maybe they were turned, but then they would still be here in the mansion with the vampires, and so far, I was pretty certain no one else lived here. Just brownies and three vampires.

“I’ll escort you back to your rooms,” Jacob offered, rising from his chair.

“Oh, you are, are you?” Harland teased. I gaped at the vampires as they grinned at one another. Why did I suddenly feel like prey?

“You can have him tomorrow,” Jacob declared, then leaned down and pressed a kiss to Harland’s lips, both men smiling lovingly at one another.

Well then.

As I followed Jacob back to my room, I couldn’t help but think back to their kiss: the way they’d looked at one another and the easy way they spoke. It had also been strangely hot watching them.

I was so deep in thought that once we’d arrived, I’d accidentally bumped into Jacob. “Sorry,” I mumbled, hurrying to create some distance between us. The scent of lavender mixed between us, a weird scent for a perfume, but I liked it on the vampire. It was soothing and faint, not at all intense like other perfumes seemed to be.

“No reason to apologize,” Jacob purred, showing his teeth in a wide smile. His mouth showed kindness. His eyes, though, had a gleam in them that told me I was about to experience something entirely new.

Chapter Four

Jacob waited for me to enter my room first. Just as I thought we would talk about whatever was going to happen, I found myself slammed into the wall, Jacob’s firm body pressed against mine. His head was at my neck, sniffing me. He had to stand on his toes to reach and the thought made the fear subside some.

“Gods,” he moaned. “You smell absolutely divine,” he rasped.

“Um, thanks?” I said, feeling a headache forming from where my head had banged against the wall.

Jacob chuckled, but kept his head by my neck, still sniffing me. “How do you want to do this? Neck or wrist?”

The fact that he actually asked surprised me. I couldn’t seem to answer, though. Part of me wanted my wrist so I could get some breathing room. It seemed that Jacob’s presence was a heady thing, and I couldn’t quite think straight with him so close. But then there was the other option, and had you asked me a few hours earlier, having my neck bit into wouldn’t have seemed like something I would enjoy. As Jacob stood there, nuzzling my neck, I couldn’t seem to want anything more. That had to be the most terrifying thing that had happened today.

“Neck,” I whimpered, allowing myself this. I could lie and tell myself that I wanted to know for my future feedings, but I knew I wanted to feel Jacob’s lips on my neck. His fangs sinking into me in such an intimate way.

Jacob growled low, making the hairs on my body stand up. It suddenly occurred to me that this would most definitely hurt. He sank his fangs into my neck, making me cry out. It didn’t hurt, but it also wasn’t exactly pleasant. The way he sucked on my neck stung, like getting a really intense hickey, just with the skin being cut open by fangs as well.

The sound of slurping filled the room, making my ears pound and my heartbeat speed up. Why was I getting worked up like this?

Jacob released me, eyes red, mouth smeared with my blood. Fuck, he truly was a monster. He licked his lips and smirked at me. “The best meal I have had in a long while.”

My knees buckled at that, making me slide down the wall. That was where Jacob left me, closing the door behind him as I sat there, wondering why the fuck my dick was hard.

The mirror showed a man who had given up on life. Too bad it was my own face staring back at me. I’d gotten very little rest, waking at the slightest sound. I never was good at sleeping somewhere new, but here I had the pleasure of knowing I was surrounded by monsters.

The cold water I’d splashed on my face hadn’t helped one bit. There simply wasn’t a cure for those dark circles and haunted eyes. Not even makeup could fix it, if I’d had any.

It wasn’t just the noises that had kept me up. No, most of it was my own damn mind, replaying the moment between Jacob and me. Each time I recalled his fangs sinking into me, I got hard. At one point, I considered jerking off, simply to stop my brain from going there again and again. Jacob wasn’t just a man, though, he was a vampire. So, there I’d been, lying in bed and wondering what the fuck was up with my dick, and why this vampire guy was something it so desperately wanted.

Knocking stopped me from spiraling further. I’d found no answers during my restless night, and there was no way I would continue in the daylight hours. To no surprise at all, Sienna stood outside my door, staring with those big blue eyes up at me. No smile. No good morning. Just staring.

“You survived your first night here,” she announced, with no emotion in her tone. “Yay,” she deadpanned, throwing her hands up and creating more confetti.
