“Why not?” I asked, wiping away my tears.

“We would kill each other.” He’d spoken those words with such finality, such sureness. Fear filled my veins. I didn’t want any of them to die. My feelings and pull towards Jacob and Harland hadn’t gone away. If anything, I only wanted them more.

Chapter Twenty-Three

The Witch Coven

Thirty years ago.

“Magda is dying!” Louise argued, gesturing to their frail coven leader.

“Which is why we need to do this now!” Jannie countered, slamming her hands down the table, rattling their potions.

“It will kill her!” Louise cried.

“I’m dying anyway, sweetheart,” Magda rasped, making her daughter look back at her with sorrow filled eyes.

“But mother…”

“No, Jannie is right. I have to do this, and it has to be now,” Magda stated.

“But he’s only five!”

“And there’s still three vampires left!” Hannah shouted as she came in, joining their meeting.

“I will bind this sacrifice to all three of them,” Magda announced, her tone deadly serious.

“But that alone will kill you,” Louise whispered. If her mother did this, and succeeded, her life would end right after.

“I am the only one left who can do this, Louise,” her mother said, eyes kind like always. “We made a mistake eight hundred years ago. Let me be the last of our kind to make up for that.”

Hannah stood taller. “We will kill them all, Magda. I swear it.”

Magda smiled at Hannah, pride filling her eyes. “I have no doubt you’ll succeed.”

So Magda sat underneath the moonlight that very night, her coven around her in a circle as she fed the earth her blood, binding the five year old Colin to the three remaining vampires. She died seconds after the spell had taken hold.

Twenty years ago.

Hannah all but flew into the room, panting for air. Her coven sisters all hurried to her side, startled by her sudden appearance.

“They just gave birth!” she breathed, her expression horrified. “What do we do?!”

Her sisters gasped. “Colin got a sibling?!” Louise roared. They could all understand her anger, after all, her mother had died binding Colin to the vampires and now all of that work was ruined.

“We need to get Colin to the mansion, no matter what,” Jannie stated.

“You want to kill a baby?!” Louise gasped.

Jannie sighed. “No, but we will have to do something once the time comes. We promised Magda.”

They all nodded. They were the last of their coven, all without magical powers but still burdened with the heavy weight of the blood vow.

“We will let the child live. For now,” Hannah agreed, taking the bottle of whiskey next to Louise. “To murderers!”

Louise and the others grimaced. They would be murderers. Soon.
