LINCOLN

I’m sitting in Captain’s office with him and Cathy. Captain and I brought Cathy in since I have to check in with her all the time. The phone on Captain’s desk is on speaker, with Martinez and Johnson on the other end. I just finished filling them in on what I got from Randy.

“You think he’s lying to you?” Johnson asks.

“No, he has no reason to lie to me. He also knew things that no one but us would have known, including where our operation base was.”

“We need to find out when the next shipment is,” Martinez states, “and this time not say anything to anyone. I’ll check in with my contacts at other jurisdictions and see if there’s anything happening we should be aware of.”

“I’ll do the same locally,” I tell him. “I’m going to hit up the fire station and talk to a couple of the paramedics and see if there have been any calls that may have been drug-related.”

“Okay, we’ll meet Monday morning at ten,” Johnson announces. “If anything comes up before then, I’ll reach out.”

“Sounds good,” I say, and Captain presses the button to end the call.

He looks up at me. “I want you to tread lightly with this,” he cautions, worry in his voice. “If they suspect you’re involved, they’ll come to town and see what’s up. It leaves us vulnerable.”

I nod, getting up from the chair and looking at Cathy. “Can I take car number four?”

She huffs as she gets up and follows me out. “One of these days, I’m going to say no, and then what?” She unlocks the drawer and dangles the key on her finger.

I snatch it up and head toward the car.

I call Finley and when it goes straight to voicemail, I try the house phone.

“Hey, Dad,” Asa answers.

I don’t know why I’m pissed that she didn’t answer. “Hey, buddy, you guys still home?”

“Yeah, we’re playing cards.”

“Okay. I’ll be home for dinner.”

“Cool,” he says and hangs up.

I want to call back and tell Asa to put Finley on the phone so she has to talk to me. But I know I’m going to have to wait until it’s just the two of us. If I have to lock her in a room for her to listen to me, I’ll do it. I imagine that room having a bed, how we’ll get over whatever this problem is, and then we’ll make out before I slide my cock into her.

Fuck, I need another cold shower. Not that it will help.

After she walked away from me last night, I thought about going after her, but I knew if I did, I’d want to kiss her again. So I took a cold shower instead. But I was still hard, and for the first time in a long while, I fisted my cock. With one hand on the tiled wall and the other hand on me, all I could think of was her. With my eyes closed, I pictured her lying on my bed, spread-eagle, then sitting backward on my face, riding it, or even my cock sliding between her tits. The one that threw me over the ledge was of her on her knees, taking my cock in her mouth as she looked up at me. I was happy the shower was on so it could drown out my moans as I came on the fucking floor.

I inhale deeply, forcing my mind back to my work before driving over to the fire station. I find Scooter, the fire chief, is out today. But Hudson is outside with a couple of the guys, shooting the shit. I motion with my head as I pass, and he joins me by my cruiser.

“What’s up?” he asks. “Stopping by to visit, or are you here for official business?”

“A bit of both.” He tilts his head to the side, knowing I’m lying to him. I chuckle. “Fine. I was wondering how your calls have been lately?”

His eyebrows pinch together, but before he answers, Collins arrives with her partner, Roman. She gets out of the rig, her baby bump noticeable now. I smile at her and hold up my hand, and she holds up her hand in response.

“Hey, you two,” I call before they go inside. They come over to us.

“What’s up?” Roman asks.

“I’m working on a case and was wondering if there has been an uptick in any calls that involve drugs.”

“No more than usual,” Roman replies.

“There were a couple of calls last week that were a little strange,” Collins cuts in. She looks at Roman. “Those two women from out of town who woke up dazed and confused.”
