“Oops. I’m sorry.”
“It’s cool, girlie. But I just peed on the stick, so I don’t know much of anything officially. Unofficially, I’m almost certain I got pregnant the night of the club, so I should be maybe three months along.”
“Bitch, you went three months without a period and just peed on a stick?”
“Hey, now . . . It’s been a hectic life since becoming Porter’s nurse and physical therapist. I assumed he stressed me so bad he messed up my cycle.”
“Chileeee, I guess. You feeling sick?”
“Not really. I’m sensitive to smells, and I throw up when I don’t like a smell, but other than the usual fatigue and cramps, I’m doing better than I thought.”
“That’s good. I hope you have a smooth journey. When are you going to tell Porter?”
“I want to schedule an appointment with the OB and get all the facts before I tell him. You know I’m extra, too, so I want to make him a basket and put some father-to-be treats in there for him when I tell him.”
“Aww! I’m here for it. I get off in about forty-five. We can hit the mall and have lunch.”
“I’d like that a lot. I’m getting dressed now.”
“Perfect.”
It felt great to share that news with my best friend and have her support me. I knew no matter what the future held for me and the unborn baby, we would have a village to help us through whatever.
Two weeks later
Soft music played on the speaker as I stood in the path of the front door. I’d watched his location for the last thirty minutes because the timing needed to be perfect. I told him to make sure he showered good at the training center because I had a busy evening planned for us.
The black silk dress fell perfectly against my curves. I braided my hair down to make sure the buss down, dark brown hair laid flat on my head. Because I didn’t have any clients other than Miss Nette for the next couple of weeks lined up while I worked on the full rebrand of the practice, I got a long custom nail set.
Waxed.
Moisturized.
Anxious.
Nervous.
The door opened, and my man walked in. He made even the simplest outfits look like a million-dollar ensemble. He had a fresh haircut, and his body looked good enough to lick from head to toe.
“Damn, Dow. This is what I have to look forward to all season?” he asked as he slid his duffel bag off his shoulder and placed it by the floor mat. He kicked the door closed with his foot and minimized the distance between us. His arms found my waist as his lips pressed against mine. I melted under his touch and felt all my nerves disappear.
“Hey.”
“Hey.”
I scratched the nape of his neck with my nails and watched his eyes close briefly.
“Coming home to you has been the highlight of my days.”
“How do you feel?”
“Sore as fuck.”
I nodded. “I knew you would be. Go sit on the couch. I’ll massage your legs while you eat the meal I prepared.”
“You cooked.” He smiled.
“I did a lot of things today. I’ll tell you all about it when you sit down.”
