“I know.”

“I don’t like it, but you say that they are not safe where they are.”

“No, they are not. It’s just a matter of time before they’re outed. They need help.”

He sighs. “I’ll see what I can do.” He sounds tired all of a sudden. “What are you going to do with Star?”

“I have no fucking idea. I’ll talk to you about her tomorrow. She wants me to get her to Mistveil and to leave her there.”

“But you don’t like that idea.”

“Of course not. It isn’t much of a plan. She wants to find the person responsible for their being left there and expose him, so that the others can return home. They were told their families would be in danger if they ever returned.”

“Looking forward to it. Go to bed.”

The line goes dead.

I wish I could. I have to fetch Star first.

I really hope those females can go to Draig Island until I can figure out something else. If not, they’re sitting ducks.

I really need to figure out what to do with Star.

The branch under me is as wide as my hips and thick with moss. I’m stretched along it with my back to the trunk and my knees drawn up so that no one walking below will see me.

I’m high enough that no one should scent me either.

So far, all is quiet, which is a good thing for the most part.

I look toward where I know the fence is because of the unnatural light in that area. Even the stars are a little muted.

I pray that the Draig females are safe, and that Flint kept his word. I really hope he comes back for me.

I chew on the inside of my cheek.

I wait.

And then I wait some more.

My legs go stiff. I flex my feet against the moss, one and then the other.

I wait a whole lot more.

What will I do if he doesn’t come back?

I’ll go in and find him, and he’ll be very sorry. That’s what. I’ll…
