“Thanks so much.” She grins. “I’m so excited.” She looks at my cup, then at me. “I see you went with the same flavors.”
“What can I say? You sold me. I’m not a sorbet kind of guy.”
Why did I say that? I sound jealous when I’m not.
I take a spoonful. Rocky Road is on the bottom, and salted caramel on top.
The noise I make reminds me of a manly version of Star. I smile around the spoon.
Holy shit.
It’s cold and sweet, and the salt hits at the end, and it tastes like pure joy.
Star is grinning at me around her own spoon. “Told you.”
I grin at her, scooping up more of the treat. “Shut up and eat.”
She laughs.
We eat in silence. The street is quiet. A car passes. I finish mine while Star easily has half of hers left.
I’m almost tempted to go back inside and get some more.
“I would get brain freeze if I ate that quickly, I swear.” She widens her eyes. “We can go if you want. I’ll eat while you drive.”
“Take your time.” I put my empty cup on the dash. “We’ve got no leads, remember?” I scratch my chin. “If there’s anything straightforward to do with Red Gate Holdings, we would have heard by now. I figure it’s going to take some digging. We might get something back on the cops who cleared Tank. I hope so. That or the doctor who—”
She puts a spoonful in her mouth, and then her eyes go really wide, and she swallows hard.
“Oh shit! No!”
“What is it?” I laugh. “Brain freeze?”
“No.” Her voice has dropped to almost nothing. “It’s my ex. He’s headed this way. What the hell?! It’s him.”
I look up through the windshield, and sure enough, a male is walking toward us. He is tall with dark hair, wearing a nice shirt. He has his arm around a female, and she’s laughing up at him while he says something into her hair. His attention is completely on her…at least for now.
But he’s walking straight toward this car, and the moment he looks up, he’s going to be looking straight at Star.
Fuck!

Star
No! No! No!
It’s him!
It’s Jett.
How can it be Jett? He’s going to see me. It’ll put him in danger. My family too.
Shiiiit!
“Kiss me.” Flint turns to face me.
“What?!” I frown, because I’m sure I heard wrong.
