“For what…”
“Hello,” that sweet, angelic voice said to the old woman behind the counter.
Hux’s mother smiled at Charleigh, but the smile didn’t reach her eyes.
“Can I help you, Ms. Kensington?” Vera, Hux’s mom, asked carefully.
She didn’t sound the least bit sincere as she asked the woman what she could help her with.
Charleigh continued to smile, shifting from foot to foot as she said, “I’m here to pick up my prescription.”
“You’ll have to go to the prescription counter then.”
I looked over at the prescription counter that was literally half a step to Charleigh’s right and felt my lips twitch.
Charleigh stepped over two steps and waited patiently for Vera to take her two steps over as well.
Vera didn’t.
She smiled at the person that’d been behind Charleigh in line and said, “Can I…”
“If you don’t move your happy ass down to this counter and get me my prescription, I’ll literally tear your fake hair out!”
Silence.
Hux, who’d been at the table with me, stood up and started over to the counter.
But Vera turned and leveled Charleigh with a look that spoke murder.
“What did you just say to me?”
“You heard me,” Charleigh snarled. “I have a raging yeast infection thanks to the antibiotics that I had to take for a raging urinary tract infection, and the last thing I want to do right now is have pants on! So will you please come down here and get my prescription for me?” Charleigh threw up her hands. “And don’t accidentally ‘lose’ it, either. We both know that you have it right there behind the counter.”
The curly-haired blonde pointed at the rack of prescriptions that were in alphabetical order.
“I’ll wait,” the customer who’d been behind Charleigh offered to Vera. “I know how those yeast infections can be.”
Before Vera could move to the register in front of Charleigh, Hux was there, snatching the prescription off the counter behind him and ringing her up. “Ten bucks, Gremlin.”
“Thanks,” Charleigh grumbled, slapping the ten-dollar bill onto the counter. “It’s been a pleasure.”
Hux grinned. “I’m sure your day will get better. Hope you get that problem taken care of.”
“Once I shove this up my hoo-hah, I sure the fuck hope so.”
“This will be the last time you come into my establishment,” Vera growled. “Next time, I’ll have you trespassed.”
“Sure, okay.”
My grin was small, but it was there.
Something in which the guys at the table noticed.
It was Hux, my club brother and good friend, who said, “Don’t go there, Court. She’s nothing but trouble.”
“Plus, she hates you.”
I blinked. “Me? Why?”
